Then there was Atlanta child killer Wayne Williams; rapist turned murderer Bobby Joe Long; England's Fred and Rosemary West, who killed girls and women in their "House of Horrors"; and Brazil's deadliest killer of children, Marcelo Costa de Andrade.

Dr. Morrison has received hundreds of letters from killers, read their diaries and journals, evaluated crime scenes, testified at their trials, and studied photos of the gruesome carnage. She has interviewed the families of the victims -- and the spouses and parents of the killers -- to gain a deeper understanding of the killer's environment and the public persona he adopts. She has also studied serial killers throughout history and shows how this is not a recent phenomenon with psychological autopsies of the fifteenth-century French war hero Gilles de Rais, the sixteenth-century Hungarian Countess Bathory, H. With serial killers a hot topic in the wake of Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning performance in Monster, forensic psychiatrist Morrison's memoir of working with more than 80 serial killers couldn't be more timely. The author's countless hours of interviews with John Wayne Gacy and others of his ilk have led her to a controversial conclusion: she believes there's a serial killer gene ("He is a serial killer when he is a fetus, even as soon as sperm meets egg to create the genes of a new person"). Unfortunately, she offers little in support of this deterministic view, and she will offend some readers with an implied exoneration of criminals whom she describes as "completely unaware of the process leading up to murder," despite the detailed planning and preparation displayed by many of them. And even readers who are willing to have an open mind about Morrison's theories are likely to find some aspects of her report a little creepy, as when she discusses a treasured trophy she keeps in her basement: "I place John Gacy's brain back in the box because my kids are calling for me upstairs."

Her memoir is not what you might call pleasant reading; it is relentlessly unpleasant, as a matter of fact, as Morrison describes these men and women and their crimes in precise, often graphic detail. At the same time, however, it is a profoundly enlightening book. Morrison provides startling insights into what factors breed serial killers, and she avoids the broad generalizations that make other books of the topic seem slick and superficial. Still, Morrison recognizes that experts have only the sketchiest understanding of what makes a person commit murder repeatedly. Do NOT Bother!!

This book was so bad that it could not even be considered laughable. I eventually had to just quit reading after it became that there is no way the author is an educated professional )let alone a published forensic psychiatrist). To be honest, I was a short way into the book before I bean to wonder if the author was even a high scool graduate. I am not a psychiatrist, but even as a layman I was able to determine that 'Ms Morrison' (if that *IS* her real name), has managed to learn a smattering of psychological/psychiatric terms but has no real grasp of their meaning...

A triumphant contribution to the field of philosophical theology

Holland's work emphasizes the most important flaw in the concept of a timeless God; namely, that it would be impossible for such a God to become flesh and live a temporal human life in the person of Jesus Christ. He provides a broad-stroke overview of the history of the debate about God's relationship to time and shows how the doctrines of divine timelessness espoused by Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, and Calvin are rooted in neo-Platonic conceptions of deity rather than the Biblical text. Next, Holland examines the scriptural and creedal statements about the Incarnation and shows how these are incompatible with a timeless God. Before delving into this argument more deeply, he responds to modern defenders of atemporalism--including Paul Helm, Brian Leftow, and the early work of Richard Swinburne--and lands several devastating arguments. Finally, he presents his threefold case that the Incarnation demonstrates sequence in the divine life: "sequence in the Incarnation event and its permanence; sequence in the life of God the Son incarnate in Jesus Christ; and sequence in the finished work of the Son in the atonement."

Although much of the work is summary, it is a significant contribution to the field of philosophical theology. The argument regarding sequence in the Son's soteriological work is particularly original. As one who is partial to Open Theism, I thought Holland's quick dismissal of Open Theism failed to account for more robust argumentation on the subject. I suspect one who is partial to Reformed Theology might feel the same way about Holland's dismissal of certain arguments for atemporalism in other areas of the book. Holland rigidly sticks to his primary subject matter and refrains from developing a robust account of the nature of time in his work; for example, he speaks of A-theory as if all A-theorists agree about the nature of time. But among A-theorists, there are some who believe only the present exists, those who contend that both past and present exist, and those who believe all three exist. Neither does he allow himself to be sidetracked by criticisms of atemporalism that do not bear direct relation to the Incarnation. These discussions would be interesting to explore in a further volume. Holland quite rightly sticks to his primary thesis: that divine timelessness is incompatible with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Since the Incarnation is a central doctrine to the Christian faith, while divine timelessness is tertiary at best, Holland makes a strong case for rejecting the atemporal view.

Not a good gift

Very misleading packaging. When you open this up as your birthday present, you think "WOW! I can build so much stuff!" But this is mostly just the book, that shows you all the kits you can buy. It comes with a few blocks to build a firetruck and flaming BBQ, which are fine, but it is marketed with the impression that it comes with blocks so versatile that you can build more than 1 scene, and that is not true. I'm glad Amazon has it in the Books category, and not under toys, because this is mostly just a catalog.

I wish I had not bought this book. It was cheaply printed, and had not much to do with fashion in film.
The writers of the different articles were from academia with their point of view of the meaning of certain films to them.
I was surprised to see a photo of Fred Astaire,incorrectly captioned as wearing a Tuxedo, when one can see that he is wearing white tie and a tailcoat in a book titled Fashion in Film.
Badly printed and pompous.

This book is not simply a tale of the legendary Rhygin who was a hero of the common Jamaican sufferah, but also a glimpse into the life of Jamaicans following the period of British colonial rule - So many themes are present in the novel - the contrast between country and city, the traditions and myths of those living in the bush, the hand to mouth existence of so many Jamaican poor that live in Kingston, the power struggle of politics and law, as well as the ganja trade which somehow effects all Jamaicans . . .
This book will immerse you in Jamaican culture, and I'm not talking about the resorts on the coast - this is the real deal and is a must read!

Fantastic third world story

Not a cheap novelization, but a work with its own life. Unforgettable story about Babylon and its impact upon the poor of Jamaica. If you are a fan of the movie, or if you are not, this is a good one for you.

"Opreshan is only fe a season"

Whoa, finished reading it last night, and can't yet bear to loan it to anyone. The book itself is alive, with ooh, such rich rich language, such a dedicated finely crafted narrative down to the last line. Want to re-read and quote passages. The humming vital poetic deep ironic language of Jamaican is such a vital tonic to the world's brew of what we must know. And I too, found this book, dusty, in an eccentric venue, while having a conversaion about Perry Henzell (who made the movie.) Aha! Synchronous grace. And thought "hmm..what's this?" I'd just read Perry Henzell's "Power Game", which was pretty cool. But this is a masterpiece. (It would be wildly amusingly great if it were required reading for anyone travelling to Jamaica. Just so you know wha's up. Look and feel deeply into things.)
May the reader like Sidney in the book: "Praises to Jah, Pedro exulted silently. Sidney fin' 'im heart."

About the Author

Rob Flickenger has been a professional systems administrator for more than 10 years, and all around hacker for as long as he can remember. Rob enjoys spreading the good word of open networks, open standards, and ubiquitous wireless networking. His current professional project is Metrix Communication LLC, which provides wireless hardware and software that embodies the same open source principles he rants about in his books. Rob also works with the U.N. and various international organizations to bring these ideas to places where communications infrastructure is badly needed. He hopes that all of this effort is contributing toward the ultimate goal of infinite bandwidth everywhere for free. He is the author of two other O'Reilly books: Linux Server Hacks and Building Wireless Community Networks (which is in its second edition).

Roger Weeks is a coauthor of Linux Unwired. He has nearly a decade of experience in systems and network administration and has been building Linux systems at home and in the enterprise since 1998. His first computer was an Atari 800, which was promptly taken apart so he could add more memory before he attached the 300bps modem.He is currently the senior network administrator for Mendocino Community Network, a small ISP in coastal northern California. MCN is owned by the local school district, and puts their profits back into the local schools. Prior to that position, he was involved with community wireless (http://www.nocat.net) and an Internet co-op (http://www.wscicc.org) in Sonoma County, CA.

Okay for the beginner Wifi hacker

There are some reasonable tips here about Wifi hacking. However, I know most of them already. The primary tips are the use of software for Wifi hacking. However, they do not go into great depth on all subjects.

There is some other background on other 802.11 protocol information. But I don't consider a background on 802.11 family of protocols a "tip". That's just information. What I want is gems of practical and applicable ideas/methods that you can only learn from long experience.
In that respect this is disappointing.
If you're serious about Wifi hacking get Wi-Foo. If you want a painless and low cost introduction then Wireless Hacks is appropriate.

Covers a wide array of operating systems...

As all books in the Hacks series, this title contains a number of tips and tricks that you can explore to enhance your experience in the given subject matter. In this case, it's wireless networking. The book seems to cover a very wide range of topics and operating systems, along with a wide array of hack complexity. Rather than concentrate on a single OS like Windows, the authors cover Windows, Mac, *and* Linux on a number of the hacks. In fact, without counting to be sure, it almost seems like Linux is a bit more predominate than the other two. That's probably understandable, as trying to get Linux to work with things like Bluetooth isn't as "out of the box" as it might be with Windows or Macs. You might also find parts of the book not applicable to your situation, like if you don't have Bluetooth on your phone. Of course, if you *do* have Bluetooth, then you've got some new toys to play with. My personal favorite section was the Do-It-Yourself Antennas chapter, as they have some good information in there on how to improve your reception and your broadcast focus. Since my access point is in the basement and my son's computer is two floors up, I could benefit from a homebrew reflector...

Normally I'm willing to recommend a Hacks title with no caveats. In this case, I think a potential reader needs to be a bit cautious. Don't count on nearly all the hacks to be of interest. You'll either be running the wrong OS, or you'll not be very adept with a soldiering iron. Conversely, all it takes is one or two good new tricks to make a book worthwhile. You could well find those gems in here, but you'll have to look a little harder than normal...

One of the best around

Wireless Hacks is one of the best, most succinct books on all things wireless that I have come across. I was expecting the standard "how to set up and secure a wireless access point" fare, and while you do get some of that, you get so much more as well. The authors really do a good job covering everything wireless. From BlueTooth technology, to standard WiFi, to hacking routers, to creating your own antennas, this is a great book for anyone interested in wireless technology.

Like the other "Hacks" books from O'Reilly, this book contains 100 different things you can do to get more out of your wireless devices. The book begins with a good section on BlueTooth technology. If you've got a new cell phone, chances are you have BlueTooth. The authors show you how to do a lot of creative things-from simply connecting your phone to your computer, to showing a slide show of photographs.

The section on 802.11x hacks is so much more than how to secure a network. The authors show you how to detect wireless networks, how to analyze and watch network traffic, and even build your own access point. One of my favorite hacks involves turning a Linksys WRT54G wireless router into a remote control car-all over 802.11b.

In the last section of the book, the authors concentrate on creating effective wireless networks-big or small. Examples are provided for creating a network for a single house, as well as how to create a network for a whole city.

This is a fascinating book, with examples provided for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms. This book is a must have for wireless network enthusiasts.
