The Art of Literature, by Arthur Schopenhauer

inestimable boon it would be, if in every branch of literature there were only a few books, but those excellent! This can never happen, as long as money is to be made by writing. It seems as though the money lay under a curse; for every author degenerates as soon as he begins to put pen to paper in any way for the sake of gain. The best works of the greatest men all come from the time when they had to write for nothing or for very little. And here, too, that Spanish proverb holds good, which declares that honor and money are not to be found in the same purse--honora y provecho no caben en un saco. The reason why Literature is in such a bad plight nowadays is simply and solely that people write books to make money. A man who is in want sits down and writes a book, and the public is stupid enough to buy it. The secondary effect of this is the ruin of language.

From the Back Cover
The great pessimist who believed in the best and expected the worst from writers here applies his caustic wit to literature and the literary scene. Schopenhauer's piercing analyses of style, critics, literary values, learning, and genius make this volume a handbook on writing―illuminated by the author's own shining, powerful style. The best way to discover the finest qualities of style and to form a theory of writing, he advises, is not to follow a trendy mannerism, but to study the ways in which great authors executed their best work. Schopenhauer provides excellent examples for aspiring writers in this collection of essays from his celebrated work Parerga. Translated by T. Bailey Saunders.

About the Author

Darren started using Sinatra in 2009 after falling in love with the direct simplicity it offers. At the start of 2010 he started the I Did It My Way blog, detailing his quest to master Sinatra, and at the end of that year used Sinatra to build the Cards in the Cloud website. Darren also writes Sinatra tutorials for RubySource.

You'll Learn Sinatra, But With Some Tiny Pain Points
By Jeff Nyman
This book overall is not bad in that it quickly leads you into using Sinatra. In fact, the first few chapters are a fantastic introduction -- although they are an introduction that you can find just about anywhere on the web if you do a bit of searching. The easy stuff is, after all, easy.

Where the book starts to fall down a small bit is when the examples get a little more complicated. As you go along, some of the code examples printed in the book seem to have problems with being out of sync with what you have done already. These seem to be because the author had developed bits of his app and then later wrote up examples. So certain examples in the book reference things that you have not done yet, which can make the code confusing. For example, I came across some code listings that had the method "protected!" referenced -- but you don't write this method until later on. Likewise, the book kept referencing router methods in song.rb -- as opposed to main.rb -- even though you had not yet written any such methods in song.rb. You do end up doing so later in the book, however, when you modularize your app. Having written tutorials for Sinatra myself I can understand how this happens but some people may find that a bit jarring as they go back and try to figure out what they missed.

There are also a few -- but very few -- annoyances in terms of omissions. For example, to use SendGrid as the author recommends (for sending emails in production via Heroku), you have to supply a credit card to Heroku. You get an error about not being verified if you follow the directions in the book. You don't have to pay for anything -- but you do need to register a credit card. Perhaps a small thing, but it's not even mentioned which means you spend time trying to figure out if you are doing something wrong. (This isn't a case of a change to Heroku since the author wrote the book; this policy has been in place pretty much since the beginning due to concerns about people using the email system for abusive purposes.)

Slightly worse of an omission in my opinion is that the author uses the v8 engine as part of the JavaScript examples and that has a very well known issue installing on Windows in that it usually cannot. If you're not using Windows, you're fine. But if you are, you are out of luck. Again, no mention is made of this at all so you might spend some time searching when the author could have simply let you know this. Having written a tutorial for Sinatra on my own blog, including using CoffeeScript, I know it is quite possible to introduce these concepts without relying on v8 so that users on any operating system can benefit.

I'm nitpicking a bit here because these things are what detract a bit for me when I'm learning. That being said, there is much more to value in this book and the problems I cite should not detract from the valuable insights that the book does offer. I'll also say that the book does take you through a nice example application, which I certainly appreciated.

Excellent introduction to Sinatra
By createdfree
I agree the previous review - the book starts off well, but dips a bit towards the end as the examples get more complicated. Fortunately, since I just wanted to get a simple data-based website up and running with Sinatra, it worked perfectly for my purposes and I've rated it more highly than that reviewer.

For reference purposes, I'm a complete Ruby novice, having worked professionally with several other languages in the past (VB, Javascript, PHP, ASP, etc.) but none recently.

Darren Jones does a great job of slowly easing the reader into the Sinatra framework via simple examples. Too many books make the mistake of devising some grand project that requires numerous lengthy files just to get something up and running. That method is extremely intimidating to people new to a language, and brings a high likelihood of mistyping something - frustrating and potentially a brick wall for getting started.

In Jump Start Sinatra, you start with a single simple file then add more as additional Sinatra functionality is introduced. The code examples are virtually always clear-cut and with just enough explanation to make sense without delving into arcane details that a beginner isn't ready for.

He also does a great job of showing the command-line entries that you'll need to get Ruby/gems/Heroku/Git/etc. up and running. It's strange how many authors gloss over these simple but extremely important details.

Other than the Windows and Heroku problems, the only other negative points that I can think of are starting off with one HTML formatter then moving to Slim partway through, and introducing some concepts at the end without detailing why it's important to, say, modularize your program. It feels like he ran out of time on those last chapters.

For fellow Windows users stuck on the use of the Ruby Racer gem, you can find a gem on GitHub called The Ruby Racer for Windows by hiranpeiris (thanks!). Once I installed it, I had no further problems with running the sample code.

great book with which to start learning Sinatra.
The book requires some basic knowledge of ruby, but starts from the installation to more advanced sinatra's aspects.

I enjoyed reading it and practice with the examples.

The Go-Between, by L. P. Hartley

A new adaptation of L. P. Hartley's story of a boy who is betrayed by a sophisticated young rich woman and her farmer lover who use him to ferry letters back and forth in the blazing summer of 1900 - with Richard Griffiths and Harriet Walter.

It's best known from the 1970 film, which focused on the main plot line. But on re-reading the book, adaptor Frances Byrnes found within it another drama perfect for audio in which an old man finds a boyhood diary and is forced to unlock the trauma inside.

Revisited by that summer for the first time since it happened, the older man (Richard Griffiths) turns detective. Leo, in his 60s, finds a locked diary in his attic: It was written in 1900, the last time he lived with any sense of possibility. Leo realises that his tidy life has been a living death and that summer was to blame.

Wistful, chaste, and utterly captivating.
By Mary Whipple
Resembling both McEwan's Atonement and Frayn's Spies in its plot, this 1953 novel, recently reprinted, tells of a pre-adolescent's naive meddling in the love lives of elders, with disastrous results. Set in the summer of 1900, when the hopes and dreams for the century were as yet untarnished by two world wars and subsequent horrors, this novel is quietly elegant in style, its emotional upheavals restrained, and its 12-year-old main character, Leo Colston, so earnest, hopeful, and curious about life that the reader cannot help but be moved by his innocence.

Leo's summer visit to a friend at Brandham Hall introduces him to the landed gentry, the privileges they have assumed, and the strict social behaviors which guide their everyday lives. Bored and wanting to be helpful when his friend falls ill, Leo agrees to be a messenger carrying letters between Marian, his host's sister, and Ted Burgess, her secret love, a farmer living nearby. Catastrophe is inevitable--and devastating to Leo. In descriptive and nuanced prose, Hartley evokes the heat of summer and the emotional conflicts it heightens, the intensity rising along with the temperature. Magic spells, creatures of the zodiac, and mythology create an overlay of (chaste) paganism for Leo's perceptions, while widening the scope of Hartley's focus and providing innumerable parallels and symbols for the reader.

The emotional impact of the climax is tremendous, heightened by the author's use of three perspectives--Leo Colston as a man in his 60's, permanently damaged by events when he was 12; Leo as a 12-year-old, wrestling with new issues of class, social obligation, friendship, morality, and love, while inadvertently causing a disaster; and the reader himself, for whom hindsight and knowledge of history create powerful ironies as he views these events and the way of life they represent. Some readers have commented on Leo's unrealistic innocence in matters of sex, even as a 12-year-old, but this may be a function of age. For those of us who can remember life without TV and the computer, it is not so far-fetched to imagine a life in which "mass communication" meant the telegraph and in which "spooning" was an adults-only secret! Mary Whipple

Easy to see why this book is still a classic!
By bensmomma
On the surface this is a story about a boy's unwitting involvement in facilitating a love affair at the turn of the century (1899 or so), told retrospectively by that boy as a man in his 60s.

On a deeper level one could say it's about our capacity for self-deception, or about the agonies of going from the intense and uncomplicated pleasures of childhood to the tortuous emotions of adulthood. But this makes the book sound detached and overly literary, which it's definitely not. It's involving and dramatic instead.

Hartley's commanding style makes this story extremely gripping; because it's told in retrospect the narrator is as articulate as an adult, yet the emotions expressed (and somehow the ones the reader feels) are the intense and confused ones of a child. Everything seems vivid and yet nothing is completely understandable, just as it is for us as children.

This lends the book a very bittersweet feeling and a magnificent aura of mystery. It's hard to imagine this book will ever go out of style.

The end of a golden summer
By hugh riminton
This book is striking as a counterpoint to Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece "Brideshead Revisited". Both were written immediately after WW2, when Englishmen, exhausted, quite reasonably gazed back at a lost time of grace and innocence.
Both Hartley and Waugh saw the falseness of that innocence, but also its deeper truth.
Hartley's story is worth reading now, at the beginning of this century, for he places it at the dawn of the last one. Leo, his protagonist, is 12 years old. He has huge dreams for the century that is breaking on him. His faith contrasts with the bitter weariness of his older self, the alternative narrator, who in 1950 lays out this story from his memory, prompted by the discovery of a childhood diary.
"Has the 20th Century done so much better than I have?" the narrator chides the memory of his childhood self. "You were vanquished, and so was your century, your precious century that you hoped so much of."
1900 was the last hot summer of Victoria's England. Leo, the only child of a widowed mother, goes to stay with a much wealthier schoolfriend. He sees nothing but the glories of the Maudsley family and their special guest, the Boer war-scarred young nobleman Viscount Trimingham. He becomes enraptured in his friend's sister, the ethereal Marian, for whom he would happily die.
In an emotional sense, he will.
Marian is kind to Leo. She also uses him. How much her affection was false, how much was genuine, lies at the core of Leo's agony.
The boy acts as a go-between in Marian's illicit love for a tenant farmer, a man of physical force, a creation worthy of DH Lawrence. Leo learns that adults are not what they seem. And he takes it hard.
It is possible to quibble with this story. It stretches credulity that even a century ago, a boy on the brink of puberty could be quite so naive - or that the loss of innocence should bring so complete an emotional collapse. The young Leo seems too vulnerable, the older one, too stifled. What holds it, though, is the beauty of the writing, the evocation of a lost age - both the age of boyhood and the age when Class, with its immutable threads, bound every English soul to its own orbit. Two world wars, for better or worse, blew such certainties apart.
The story lives up to the mystery and the promise of its rightly famous opening line, the haunting and teasing truth: "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."

Farabeuf or The Chronicle of an Instant, by Salvador Elizondo

A ’60s Mexican cult masterpiece, Farabeuf is an enigmatic vision of the French surgeon L.H. Farabeuf’s curious existence, from his morbidly erotic obsessions to his life as an inventor of grisly surgical instruments, an amateur photographer, and possibly even a spy in occupied Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion. With patience and purpose, Salvador Elizondo’s sensual prose brilliantly constructs, explores, and proceeds to annihilate the boundaries between pain and pleasure, love and lust, reality and longing—between our individual and collective identities.

In many ways a Latin American response to the work being done by European writers like Alain Robbe-Grillet, Farabeuf is at once single-minded in its intensity and nearly limitless in its possible interpretations, at times shocking and savage, at others sensuous and poetic. An unsung masterpiece of Spanish-language literature, now made available again in English on the fiftieth anniversary of its original publication.

An Uncomplicated Life: A Father's Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter, by Paul Daugherty

A father’s exhilarating and funny love letter to his daughter with Down syndrome whose vibrant and infectious approach to life has something to teach all of us about how we can better live our own.

Jillian Daugherty was born with Down syndrome. The day they brought her home from the hospital, her parents, Paul and Kerry, were flooded with worry and uncertainty, but also overwhelming love, which they channeled to “the job of building the better Jillian.” While their daughter had special needs, they refused to allow her to grow up needy—“Expect, Don’t Accept” became their mantra. Little did they know how ready Jillian was to meet their challenge.

Paul tells stories from Jillian’s mischievous childhood and moves to her early adulthood, tracing her journey to find happiness and purpose in her adult life, sharing endearing anecdotes as well as stories about her inspiring triumphs. Having graduated from high school and college, Jillian now works to support herself, and has met the love of her life and her husband-to-be, Ryan.

In An Uncomplicated Life, the parent learns as much about life from the child as the child does from the parent. Through her unmitigated love for others, her sparkling charisma, and her boundless capacity for joy, Jillian has inspired those around her to live better and more fully. The day Jillian was born, Paul says, was the last bad day. As he lovingly writes, “Jillian is a soul map of our best intentions”—a model of grace, boundless joy, and love for all of us.

From the Back Cover

A father's exhilarating and inspiring love letter to his daughter with Down syndrome, whose vibrant and infectious approach can teach us all how to live a little better

"Jillian was born October 17, 1989. It was the last bad day."

Jillian Daugherty was born with Down syndrome. The day her parents, Paul and Kerry, brought her home from the hospital, they were flooded with worry and uncertainty, but also with overwhelming love, which they channeled to "the job of building the better Jillian." They knew their daughter had special needs, but they refused to have her grow up needy. They were resolved that Jillian's potential would not be limited by preconceptions of who she was or what she could be.

In this charming and often heart-stirring book, Paul tells stories about Jillian making her way through the world of her backyard and neighborhood, going to school in a "normal" classroom, learning to play soccer and ride a bike. As she grows older, he traces her journey to find happiness and purpose in her adult life, including vignettes about her inspiring triumphs and the guardian angels—teachers, neighbors, friends—who believed in Jillian and helped her become the exceptional young woman she is today.

In An Uncomplicated Life, the parent learns as much about life from the child as the child does from the parent. Being with Jillian, Paul discovered the importance of every moment and the power of the human spirit—how we are each put here to benefit the other. Through her unmitigated love for others, her sparkling charisma, and her boundless capacity for joy, Jillian has inspired those around her to live better and more fully. As Paul writes, "Jillian is a soul map of our best intentions," a model of grace, happiness, and infectious enthusiasm. She embraces all that she is, all that she has—"I love my life. I just love my life," she says.

In her uncomplicated life, we see the possibility, the hope, and the beauty of our own.

A Triumph of the Human Spirit!
By John T. Richardson
One of the things that truly touch my soul these days is the triumph of the human spirit. I am finding that as I have become an "OG" (which followers of Paul's column will know means an "old guy"), watching or even hearing about people accomplishing things that others, or perhaps they themselves, thought highly unlikely or even impossible, brings tears to my eyes while lifting me up at the same time. It can be as simple as a victory in an athletic event, or someone lending a helping hand to a complete stranger. Paul Daugherty's latest book, An Uncomplicated Life: A Fathers Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter, provides so many of those moments that define the joy of life itself. The story is not without moments of sadness, frustration, and even of anger, but the overall feelings that it left me with were joy, pride and hope!

I have a daughter. She does not have Down Syndrome as does Paul's daughter Jillian, in fact she does not have a disability of any kind. However, I still related to a number of things such as the, "Oh my god, my little girl is growing up and doesn't need me anymore" moments. I have also felt the sadness at the times when my daughter would come home after sitting alone at lunch or feeling like she had no friends. My daughter has also been told that there were certain things in her life for which she would not be well suited (like basketball at 5'4" and about 115 lbs.-she too proved them wrong buy the way!). My point being that even if you don't have a child with a disability, you will relate to so much of this book. I also believe that even if you don't have children, Jillian's story will provide you with so many of the same special moments that it did me. It is that good. It is that inspiring.

For me there are really two stories running concurrently in this book. The first is Paul and Kerry's struggle with and the ultimate acceptance of Jillian's disability and what it would mean for their lives. What do you do when your whole life suddenly has been turned upside down? Why did this happen to you? We often wonder in life "What did I do to deserve this?" "Why did God do this to me?". While it was impossible at the time, Paul, Kerry and their son Kelly, years later came to understand that maybe God did this for them, that Jillian was their gift to help them (and anyone who was to become a part of Jillian's life), learn what life was really about.

Most of us have so many complications in our lives, and more often than not those complications are self-inflicted. Work, home-life, other inter-personal relationships and our "goals" in life, all come with strings attached, conditions if you will. Typically these complications are a result of fear-fear of love not returned, fear of losing something and fear that we are not good enough. I think that the Daugherty family was given a gift. They were blessed with a child who interacts without strings, one who loves unconditionally and who sees the good in everything and everyone - even today as a fully grown, mature and absolutely lovely young lady. Jillian's life more full of love than fear. Most of us, I suspect, cannot say the same.

This is a story of Paul and Kerry and their tireless effort to urge the people who came in contact with Jillian, not to just look at her, but to see her, Jillian, as an individual capable of all the same feelings and emotions as the rest of us. They fought hard to make certain that those close to Jillian helped her to expect that she could achieve the many of the things that any other child could achieve. They fought almost daily so that the Loveland City School System didn't just accept the systematic limitations prescribed for those with cognitive disabilities and file them away, but that they teach Jillian along with all the other children, in the same classrooms, to learn, to push herself and to expect more of herself than did the majority of the world around her.

But this is also the story of Jillian, Jillian The Magnificent (JTM) as Paul often refers to her in his columns in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Jillian charged into this world, in a hurry and full of opinions and with her eyes looking at and seemingly taking in everything around her. Perhaps that was a sign, or should have been, that this extraordinary little girl was ready to jump in head first to all the world had to offer. Jillian learned to do most everything that the other children did, much of the time it just took longer, sometimes a lot longer.

But Paul and Kerry persevered. There were times when they had no more to give, when they wondered if maybe the system was right about Jillian. But then would come that small victory, that triumph and the joyful look on Jillian’s angelic face, that reinforced what they had hoped – that Jillian could be more, that she could achieve more than the world around her believed possible.

Jillian’s unrelenting determination and her vibrant spirit, made those long days (and evenings) studying worth it. Her determination helped fuel theirs. Jillian would ride a bicycle, she would graduate high school and she would go to college. And Jillian would find love too, with her “favorite boy”, Ryan. They are to be married later this month. I bet there won’t be a dry eye in the house. I bet Jillian herself will be “happy-crying”.

It becomes clear throughout the book that Jillian brings out the best (sometimes the worst) in those around her. People see in her many of the things in her that they would like to see in themselves –innocence, trust, kindness, happiness and spontaneous bursts of laughter and joy. Whether by circumstance or not, Jillian’s life is a simple one. It is filled with small victories every day. Jillian’s is truly is an uncomplicated life. But it is also one that is enriching to her and to so many of people around her.

Throughout this book, Jillian, along with Paul, Kerry and Kelly has given me more faith in people and many more examples of the triumph of the human spirit. Thank you Paul, for sharing that experience with me.

Do yourself a favor. Read this book. I suspect you will get many of the same rewards from doing so as I have!

Tough Guy Down
By john baskin
I once edited a collection of Paul Daugherty’s columns in which I wrote that 'Daugherty is a tough guy; his aggressively democratic-with-a-small-d pieces have a no-nonsense, blue-collar sensibility, spiked with a streak of irreverence.' That, of course, is what brings in his many fans (and the occasional death threat). But if you want to see the OTHER guy behind The Guy, read his new book, 'An Uncomplicated Life,' the story of a father (and mother) raising a child with Down Syndrome. Here, he’s Tough Guy Down, relating, in his usual straightforward manner, family life with Jillian, the little dynamo who’s the book’s heroine. Doc always had the ear of a good reporter, and so his story deals with the medical issues, as well as the paradox of an education policy that says kids with disabilities must be educated while not providing the funding—and personnel—to do so. But the show here is the wit and ebullience of Jillian, who says to Paul as she’s being disciplined, 'You wanna piece of me, Daddy-o?' Or Jillian dialing 911 for an emergency, which is that’s she’s out of chocolate milk. Paul’s always been one of the best sportswriters in the country, but Jillian is his—and Kerry’s—best work. Read the book.

Amazing Read!
By Lois Plone
I first saw the authors letter to his daughter on her wedding day on social media and thought, "wow what a wonderful father!" I then saw that he wrote a book about his exceptional daughter and I thought, "if this is anything like his letter I'm sure I will love it." Paul did not disappoint!

You go through this family's journey and struggle for the rights that every child has but for some reason was a fight for their dear Jillian. I feel as though I know them all so well since reading this book. I laughed, cried, love and hated through this whole story! It was the greatest journey I have ever been on and I will be reading it again! My only negative thing about the book was it ended:-( I would so love to read more of this amazing family and my new favorite young woman, Jillian!

Since reading this book I have posted about it on social media and I even accosted people in Barnes and Noble telling them all about this amazing book and that their life is not complete until they read it!

To say I am a big fan is an understatement. I would easily give it 100 stars if I could. Thank you for sharing your story.

Fascinating: the story of the language.

I really enjoyed this.
Traces the evolution of English, pinpointing
the first use of many words now in
everyday use.
For instance, when did people start talking about
'politicians'? Or 'originality'? Not so long ago
as you might suppose.
I'm buying another copy for a friend.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Wilhelmina—more frequently known as Wil—is a princess. However, she's a royal who's more used to stealing food than curtsying in a palace. Wil's homeland of Aecor was conquered 10 years earlier by the Indigo Kingdom and Wil and a band of other orphaned children of Aecor nobility have been living secretly as refugees in Skyvale, the capital of the Indigo Kingdom. The teen and the other refugees have plans to take back their home by infiltrating the palace. As Wilhelmina's mission inside the palace proceeds, it is complicated not just by her secret ability to practice magic—which has been forbidden for almost a century—but also by her connection to the vigilante Black Knife, a masked figure who helps the poor and the weak in the streets of Skyvale. Fans of Katniss and the Sisters of St. Mortain from Robin LaFevers's "His Fair Assassin" series (Houghton Harcourt) and other strong, vengeful female heroines will root for Wil, as she plots revolution, struggles with her conflicted feelings for Black Knife, and discovers more about wraith, the toxic by-product of magic. Although this series opener starts off with poorly executed exposition to provide the necessary background, the plot quickly picks up pace, and the highlights of this novel are the subtle lessons in the sacrifices and responsibilities of leadership, as well as the unique way in which magic use and wraith are echoes of our own world's debate about environmental justice.—Evelyn Khoo Schwartz, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DC

Review
Hidden identities, allusions to environmental concerns, a clever heroine with a worthy potential love interest, and some monster-mashing fight scenes elevate this romantic series opener. A cliff-hanger ending will have many readers exclaiming aloud their impatience at having to wait for the sequel. (Booklist)

Fans of Katniss and the Sisters of St. Mortain from Robin LaFevers’s “His Fair Assassin” series and other strong, vengeful female heroines will root for Wil. (School Library Journal)

Meadows delivers a powerful coming-of-age story. (Publishers Weekly)

Solid worldbuilding, interesting characters and just enough romance make this an enjoyable read. (Kirkus Reviews)

Meadows deftly juggles a multitude of plot points here, managing to link each element to Wil’s growth as a character. A cliffhanger ending puts a beloved character’s life in peril, ensuring both a sequel and readers’ clamoring for it. (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

One of the most compelling fantasies I’ve ever read. Fans of strong heroines, secret identities, and terrifyingly dangerous magic should put Jodi Meadows at the top of their ‘to read’ lists. (C.J. Redwine, author of the Defiance trilogy)

THE ORPHAN QUEEN casts its spell from the first page. Exquisite, captivating and romantic —Jodi Meadows’s world forbids magic, but THE ORPHAN QUEEN is brimming with it. I loved this book! (Danielle Paige, New York Times bestselling author of Dorothy Must Die)

From the Back Cover

Wilhelmina has a hundred identities.

She is a princess. When the Indigo Kingdom conquered her homeland, Wilhelmina and other orphaned children of nobility were taken to Skyvale, the Indigo Kingdom's capital. Ten years later, they are the Ospreys, experts at stealth and theft. With them, Wilhelmina means to take back her throne.

She is a spy. Wil and her best friend, Melanie, infiltrate Skyvale Palace to study their foes. They assume the identities of nobles from a wraith-fallen kingdom, but enemies fill the palace, and Melanie's behavior grows suspicious. With Osprey missions becoming increasingly dangerous and their leader more unstable, Wil can't trust anyone.

She is a threat. Wraith is the toxic by-product of magic, and for a century using magic has been forbidden. Still the wraith pours across the continent, reshaping the land and animals into fresh horrors. Soon it will reach the Indigo Kingdom. Wilhelmina's magic might be the key to stopping the wraith, but if the vigilante Black Knife discovers Wil's magic, she will vanish like all the others.

Jodi Meadows introduces a vivid new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, dangerous magic, and one girl's battle to reclaim her place in the world.

A fantastic start to a new YA fantasy series!!
By Lori
I really, really loved this book. It’s so exciting when you get to start a new series and even more exciting when you fly right through the book and love it! I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson, and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. It almost felt like a mash-up of those three books with a little bit of Batman mixed in there. That might sound weird, but it worked. Believe me.

There is a lot going on in this book. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep it all straight and I’d get lost along the way, but it actually worked really well together. Once I got the hang of the alliances and kingdoms and the wraith, everything else just fell into place and it all flowed really well together. Sometimes when there are so many elements happening at once, something just doesn’t fit in, but it all fit together nicely, especially the further on in the book I got. Pieces just kept falling into place and I loved that.

One of my favorite things about this book was the characters. I really love Wilhelmina. She started off knowing she was the princess of a fallen kingdom and wanting to do nothing but get her kingdom back. She was a fighter and a protector but not really a leader. She spent so much time thinking about those who were close to her and protecting them that she hadn’t really spent the time thinking about what winning her kingdom back would really mean and what the best way to do that was. When she had the time to think about it, everything changed. I loved to see her go through that and, in a sense, really grow up and become a leader of her people. And even though she changed and grew up throughout the book, I liked her both in the beginning and at the end. I also like that we know who she is from the very beginning. There’s no big reveal about how she’s the lost princess or anything. We just know.

The supporting characters in this book were so good, too! They were so well developed and interesting and had me questioning what I thought was going to happen. They didn’t always turn out like I thought they would or do the things I wanted them to. They kept me on my toes and turning the pages and I loved that! There is some secret identity things going on and some romances and while I didn’t necessarily like every character in the book (which we aren’t suppose to do), I loved the roles they all played. I can’t wait to learn more about them in the next book and see if some of my predictions are right about where they might be going and planning!

Which leads right into the next thing I need to talk about. This book has one of the biggest, meanest cliffhangers ever. And I’m not exaggerating. At least, I don’t think I am. Maybe there are some out there that I haven’t read yet. But this one is seriously bad. I definitely had one of those moments turning the page back and forth wondering if maybe my ARC had been missing a page or two. And maybe it was. I’m still holding out a little hope that when my finished copy shows up, there will be a couple of more pages in the end of it. It’s definitely what I’ll be looking at first thing I get my hands on it! I don’t want to keep hammering on the same thing, I just want to prepare all of you for the pain that comes at the end of the book. It’s so good, but most definitely painful. In some sick way, I kind of loved it. But mostly I just want to know what happens right after the book ends! I NEED TO KNOW!! If anyone has any kind of information about this, please share it with me!

Okay, enough with that. I feel that I’ve warned you plenty about the pain this book can cause. And I certainly don’t want you to be turned off by that. It’s definitely worth the pain. This book was seriously good and very addicting. If you’ve read all of the Throne of Glass books and need a new series to start, I highly recommend this one. It’s full of action, political intrigue, princes and princesses, runaways, secret identities, spies, magic, a little bit of romance, and a kick-ass heroine!! I loved it! Now go read it!

The Orphan Queen is a story following Wilhelmina and while she has multiple identities at the moment through and through she is a princess of a kingdom taken over by the Indigo Kingdom ten years before in the One Day War. She and many others were left orphans and taken into the Indigo Kingdom but as they escape they took on the title of Ospreys and learn stealth and theft anything to survive and take back her thrown. To do so she will work as a spy and infiltrate Skyvale Palace and gather information on their foes. However, taking her throne back isn't that simple, on top of dealing with those difficulties there is a much larger issue at stake, the Wraith, toxic by-product of magic making magic illegal for years, is working it's way across the continent laying waste to the land. Even if she manages to get her crown back she will still have to contend with this threat.

Let us start with Wil, she is different than what I have come to expect from characters reclaiming their thrown. She may be the rightful queen but her and the Ospreys have a different leader of their group, Patrick. His father was the former General and he was the oldest when they escaped making him the best choice to get them where they needed to be. Wil is a skilled fighter, they all are after years of surviving, which makes her pretty bad ass. We also learn from the start she herself has magic, a flasher, but thankfully no one knows or she could be killed. With magic being illegal and the cause of the Wraith it's a touchy subject. She's a master forger and loves the art of writing and drawing and I enjoyed the way it played out. As a future queen of her people she also sees a larger picture and while she lets others lead she does not blindly follow but questions and looks for her own answers.

In Skyvale one figure in particular hunts down flashers and those who hurt the city, Black Knife. Black Knife is a very complex character. He is one to be feared but as we continue we come to see more of him and just what he does. He is a vigilante but he also is doing so to save the people of the city which is commendable. I think I liked this character the best as I got to know him and even as I suspected who Black Knife was beneath the mask early on it was fun to watch it play out. I don't think the identity is meant to be shocking, I think there is enough out there to make the reader suspect and in turn enhance the character without fully confirming until the final section.

The characters and their interactions were what really moved things along for me. I was invested in them, Patrick and his rule of the Ospreys and did I trust him or not, her best friend Melanie and did I suspect her, the other ladies of court while under cover and their motives. Clearly I distrust everyone it seems. We also can't forget some of our men, Prince Tobias and his cousin / guard James and of course our masked Black Knife all of whom have their moments both good and bad. All of them formed a web that makes you want more. And if that isn't enough you really get to dive into the whole world of Skyvale and the Wraith. Trying to figure out what it is and how to stop it and the beasts it creates keeps you guessing. What is rumor, myth, and what might actually help. All while giving us hints of the past with connections and magic itself. Along with pieces of what Wil herself can do as she struggles with what she thought she knew of the past and what is becoming clear may be well and true.

Overall it really took off and after the first 70 or so pages where I enjoyed it I moved to hard to put down. I am so glad I waited to read this book though because with the ending that I had now I don't have to wait to read what happens next and how the story ends. I will be starting The Mirror King today and I will share thoughts once I finish.

This was an excellent book. The characters are well developed
By Kindle Customer
This was an excellent book. The characters are well developed, and the protagonist is a strong female role model, who is not dependent on her male love interest. I would highly recommend this book for young adults grades 6 and above. The language is rigorous without causing frustration. There is no adult graphic content.

And The Story Lives On!!!!
By Sheryl Strandlien
I would have liked the movie to be longer and tell some of the story once Polly and Charlie were together and living by the River of No Return......the Salmon River. I didn't want the story to end when it did. I wanted to see more of their life once they were together too.
Left me hanging! I have actually been to their place on the river and looked at the old house they lived in. It is an historical spot and I really enjoyed standing on some of the same land they did. Now I have read the book, seen the movie and actually visited the exact location where they lived.

An entertaining and fascinating look into the life of one of our Pioneer Women.
By Lenora G.
I first read this book shortly after it came out in 1981, and I loved it. I've never forgotten it, have loaned my copy out, and replaced it, at least 4 times. I recently bought the New Edition, which contains additional information, and am so glad I did.

In rereading the book, I realized I had remembered certain scenes accurately – and some that didn't exist at all ;-).

Lalu Nathoy/Polly Bemis was a real woman who was sold by her father to bandits, smuggled into the US and, as the slave she was, found her way from San Francisco to Portland to Warrens, Idaho where her owner used her in his saloon as a 'bar girl' and where she became known as Polly.

Little is known of her life in China, and McCunn does a marvelous job of conveying the 'what might have happened.' Girls had little to no value in China, except to marry into a higher level of society if at all possible, thereby bringing some monetary relief to her family. To this end, many first born girls of even peasant families, had their feet bound. Lalu's feet were bound, and then unbound when she was needed to work in the fields to help her father. Although her feet never returned to 'normal' she was able to walk long distances and do field work on them.

Bandits came to her village, and she was stolen. The leader gave her father two bags of seed, thereby changing it from a theft to a sale. Lalu began her journey to probably Shanghai where she was smuggled aboard a ship bound to San Francisco. From there, she went north until eventually reaching Warrens, Idaho, as the slave of Hong King. There is a myth about gaining her freedom, the truth as we know it is that no one knows how she ended up free. We do know she married her benefactor, Charlie Bemis, and lived many years in the Salmon River area.

I think McCunn did a tremendous job showing the cultures of China and pioneer Idaho in this book. Yes, there were areas I would have liked to see expanded, and undoubtedly as you read it, there will be areas you wish were in more depth, but over all, this is a fascinating, and accessible story. I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in our history, or the history of the Chinese in our country. Although it is an adult book, it is suitable for those in Junior High School.

It's a good read, and you're bound to learn something!
