If you drive a 280ZX, don't leave home without it.

This book saved me a tow on the side of the highway more than once. I'm not especially mechanically inclined, but I was able to use it to diagnose a couple of basic problems that were solvable with electrical tape/zipties (at least until the next time someone got a chance to work on it)

Anyone who enjoys owning a car this "classic" (read: old) knows that usually periodic breakdowns come with the territory. You will be very very glad to have this book in your trunk when that happens.

I've even had a mechanic admit to me that when he saw it in my trunk, he read through it to make sure what he was about to do was a reasonable fix. So even if you never read it, it might pay for itself in avoided trips to the auto mechanic!

Very Detailed and Exact to Description

If you need a car manual, no matter what make, model, year, etc., then Haynes company is your first choice. I don't work for them, but am a big fan of their automotive books. They provide such great detail and superior pictures that maintaining your car is a piece of cake. No fuss and no hassle. Have a car problem? I am virtually positive you can find it and solve it from this book. If not, use an OBD-II diagnostic scanner to find the trouble code.

Overall, great product. No problems and had all the details to restore and maintain a Datsun 280ZX.

Well-written, beautiful story

I bought this book on my Kindle for my honeymoon simply because the reviews were decent and the price was low. I ended up reading it after my honeymoon was over, still...I found myself eager to get home after work each day, so that I could read more. I actually got through the entire book in about three days, and felt as if I went on an emotional journey as a read this book. As an adult, I think I appreciate this book more than if I were a teenager, having lost all but one of my grandparents, and having reflected back often on how my own parents were shaped by their parents.

Funny stuff

My young nephew had just finished reading this book. I asked him, "Did you like it?" He said, "It's good." Which for him is a rave review. I picked it up and, as they say, I couldn't put it down. There are so many funny observations about people and family life, it had me chuckling, page after page. The young narrator writes, "I guess I take after my mom... she never does the dishes until it comes time to actually use the plates... One of my mom's jokes is to call our stack of take-out menus her cookbook." By the time the supernatural stuff started, I was hooked. (And, thank god, the ghostly time-travel stuff is anchored so deeply in the real world, I stuck with it and began to really enjoy it, even though I usually flinch from fantasy.) This is such a well-written and delightful story. I look forward to the author's next book.

Must read!

SLIPPING is a book you just have to read. We're part of a mother-son book club and were lucky enough to read this book when it was in manuscript form. We liked it enough to re-read it again when it went to hardcover (June 08). Cathleen Davitt Bell did a great job creating an interesting book. It is a new twist on fantasy. We wanted to keep reading it to find out how the main character handles school, friends, and family issues. We weren't able to put the book down until we figured out the "slipping" aspect. Great ending. We're still thinking/talking about this book and sharing it with friends. A must read. We hope there will be a sequel. -- Mom (42) / son (15 and a huge fantasy fan)

Great Book on House Rulerships!

This excellent book is called "The Only Way to Learn Astrology: Horoscope Analysis," but the bulk of it focuses on one facet of horoscope analysis, house rulers. If you're looking for a either a beginners guide on how to interpret a chart, or an all-around horoscope analysis guide that blending many elements of chart interpretation such as planetary patterns and aspects, you'll probably be disappointed. However, if you have a basic understanding of the planets and houses, and you're looking for one of the best guides around on house rulerships, this is the book for you! The first half of the book (Part I) is devoted to house rulerships.
What is a house rulership? Example: Marilyn Monroe had Leo (ruled by the sun) on the ascendant. Marilyn's sun was in her 10th house. The reader can go to lesson 1, First House Rulers," look up "Ruler of the 1st in the 10th" and find out what this means. Marilyn Monroe had Virgo (ruled by Mercury) on her 2nd house cusp, and Mercury in her 10th house. The explanation is in lesson 2, "Second House rulers" under "Ruler of the 2nd in the 10th." Volume 3 of "The Only Way..." series helps one go around the wheel, house by house, figuring out what it means to have that house's ruler in each of the houses. The best way to learn from this book is to begin with one's own chart (and then loved ones) and read the introduction to that house, determine where the ruler is, and then try to figure out what the house rulership means before reading the description. Each of the 144 rulership patterns is well explained and uses an example of a famous (or infamous) person-everyone from Mohandas Gandhi to Charles Manson, that really helps emphasize the point.
Part II, "The Art of Chart Interpretation" provides detailed chart interpretations of four famous people (charts provided in this volume): General George Patton, Ernest Hemingway, Princess Diana of Wales, and Barbra Streisand. In this section, March and McEvers throw all their fancy stuff at you yods, dwads, decantes, part of increase, and the like. While there's benefit in reading how two skilled astrologers interpret a chart start to finish, this section is of limited "teach you how to do it for yourself" value, for which I recommend the first volume of the series. Rulerships are discussed quite a bit in this section, so it provides a review.
Part III, "Delineating for a Purpose" is an interesting discussion of astrological associations with health/illness, physical appearance, relationships of many sorts (preview of coming attractions for volume 5), and vocational aptitudes. Each of these chapters is a well-explained, good introduction to the topic, but not a complete treatment. Unlike the house rulership information, I've seen much of this information elsewhere.
I primarily use and recommend this book as a guide to house rulerships-the best I've seen. However, as this book, written in 1982, and the series age, chances are that younger astrologers will not identify with the famous people given as examples, as much as the babyboomers of my generation. I like the fact that when they refer to a chart in this volume, they provide the page number. However, some of the chart discussions will refer you to charts in other volumes in the series. Despite a detailed table of contents, the book lacks an index. I'm giving the book 5 stars, primarily based on the strengths of sections 1 and 3.

The Only Way to Learn About Horary and Electional Astrology

My four stars is based on my opinion that while this may not be the "only" horary astrology book you'll ever need, it certainly delivers what it promises-simplicity. If you want to learn how to receive simple yes or no answers to specific questions using astrology and don't have years to spend studying the art of horary, then I'd recommend this book. After you get the basics under your belt with this book, you'll probably want to refine your skills with a more complex study of it. When this book says simple-it means it! If nothing else, this book doesn't bog you down in tons of confusing rules and terminology. This means that you may be less likely to throw in the towel when it comes to learning horary astrology. If your knowledge of astrology is at an intermediate level, this is a good book.

A great read with caution

These ladies really knew their stuff. I recommend their entire series to all students of astrology. Just beware in this particular book that Joan's shortcuts are just that -- shortcuts. While they may have worked for her, I find that Anthony Louis' [and Olivia Barclay's] book is a better reference for serious horary students. The main types of pain -- pain that is caused by stimulation of pain receptors in normal tissue (physiological pain) and pain that is caused by pathological processes and change in the function of the spinal cord and the brain (pathological pain)-- are discussed in separate Sections. The book is suitable for anybody interested in pain; a person who has pain will find information that may relate to his/her own pain. Pain is complex; it can be an adverse phenomenon that deserves treatment, but at the same time, some forms of pain are absolutely necessary for a normal life. Pain is a fascinating yet frightening subject, from wherever and however it is viewed. It has emotional features and medical features. Pain can last a short time (acute pain) or it can last a long time (chronic pain). Understanding pain and its cause is both interesting and challenging. Pain is a self-experience, it cannot be measured and it cannot be seen or evaluated on MRI scans. Many people are afraid of pain; some are afraid of dying because they believe it will be painful. Pain in itself is not life threatening (except when it cases a person to commit suicide), but it decreases the quality of life. Some forms of pain may give pleasure to some individuals; it may have a role in sexual behavior. Some individuals with some diseases, such as autism, have an abnormal perception of pain. There are ample treatments available for acute pain but treatment of chronic pain and pain of no known cause, especially, is challenging, but rewarding. Pain is not a sense like hearing and vision. Pain may be a symptom of a disease or a physical trauma, but the cause of many forms of pain is unknown. Pain plays an important role in diagnosis of many diseases but a patient's description of his/her pain can be complex and difficult to interpret. The book is derived from my many years of teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses on the “Biology of Pain” in the Neuroscience Program of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. I still use the book as a text for my course.

About the Author
Dr. Aage R. M�ller has a medical degree (D. Med. Sci.) from the Karolinska Institut (School of Medicine) in Stockholm, Sweden where he spent 13 years in the position of "Docent" (Assistant Professor). He immigrated to the USA together with his wife, Margareta B. M�ller, MD, D. Med. Sci. 1978, both to take positions at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He later took a position at the Department of Neurological Surgery as (tenured) Professor of Neurosurgery. After 19 years at the University of Pittsburgh doing research and teaching he moved to Dallas, Texas to take a position at The University of Texas at Dallas where he had the Endowed Margret Fonde Jonsson Professorship in Cognition and Neuroscience in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He is now the Founders Professor of The University of Texas at Dallas and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in topics in neuroscience including "Biology of Pain", "Sensory Systems", "Functional Human Neuroscience", "Neural Plasticity and Disorders of the Nervous System" and "Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring". He has the title of "Distinguished Lecturer in Behavioral and Brain Sciences". Dr. Aage M�ller is the (single) author of fifteen professional books on various topics in neuroscience. He is editor or co-editor of nine published books, author or co-author of 202 articles in refereed journals, and the author of 105 chapters in professional books. He is the founder of the international journal "Hearing Research" and he was editor-in-chief of the journal for 27 years (from 1978 to 2005). He is member of the editorial boards of several other international journals. He is now involved in research on tinnitus and he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tinnitus Research Initiative Foundation, an international organization based in Regensburg, Germany, with an American branch based in Dallas, Texas.

Pain, Its Anatomy, Physiology, and Treatment offers a comprehensive understanding of pain and pain management to the reader. In its preface, he notes specifically that the book is not only written for students, doctors, and researchers, but also for someone who desires to be informed regarding their healthcare.

Dr. Moller documents our understanding of pain and sensation with exceptional levels of detail throughout the book. His lucid explanations of more abstract phenomena, such as central neuropathic pain and enteroception, have rendered them simple and easy to understand. Nevertheless, they are sufficiently in depth to require references from tens of authors for each chapter. Furthermore, diagrams, charts, and other graphics are prevalent throughout the textbook, and contribute more tangible evidence and explanation for the material that is covered in the book. Each is referenced clearly and appropriately in the text, so that there is no confusion regarding the relevance of any of the visuals. Any image that is not unique to the textbook has a reference to its source directly under it, making it easy to pursue a deeper understanding of the material if the reader so desires.

The levels of organization in Dr. Moller's book make it very simple to search through, which is absolutely necessary for one covering such a broad range of material. Each section is prefaced by a short introduction of the material, and each chapter begins with an abstract, from which a reader with little time on their hands could easily glean the fundamentals of the information, along with another introduction after the abstract. The chapters themselves are organized into many sections and subsections, making searching for specific information even easier. In addition, the sections of the book are followed by a list of all the documents that were referred to in writing the book. The volume of papers from which Dr. Moller introduced knowledge is immense, with the sections of his book including information from around two hundred papers each. The only issue with organization of information that the book presents is a slight misnumbering of pages, making the index a little more difficult to use.

The appendices of his book also contain valuable information. For those unfamiliar with the concept of neural plasticity, there is a brief yet sufficient explanation of it in Appendix A, and in Appendix B, there is a map of all the Brodmann's Areas of the brain, complete with short explanations of areas that are more difficult to place. These bits should be valuable to undergraduate students interested in neuroscience, or medical students that are unfamiliar with the neurosciences. There is also a list of abbreviations made throughout the book after the table of contents, and is valuable in clearing up any gaps in knowledge of readers. However, the book is generally clear regarding the abbreviations, so it is usually not an issue.

This is the ideal introductory textbook to the concept of pain, and yet it offers a deep understanding of the neurobiology of pain to any reader who chooses to digest it thoroughly. Dr. Aage Moller's professorship is well reflected in his writing; his style is accommodating for readers who lacking expertise in the subject, and the book is well organized to be read from cover to cover by someone less familiar with the neurosciences. I would highly recommend it to all, not only for its value as a textbook on the neurosciences, but also for the vast amount of medical information it offers the reader.

Purchased this a while ago (long ago actually) for a college course I was taking. Price was perfect compared to book stores! However it did not say that is was the instructors edition (though not a big deal but had all the answers and other notes in it not normally in the student addition). Good purchase and I would purcahse from them again!

Written by a former military lawyer, the book will be of interest to military commanders, their staff and legal advisers but also to officials in Foreign and Defence Ministries and non governmental agencies working in conflict situations, as well as staff of international courts and tribunals dealing with war crimes. Previous editions have been recommended reading for students of international law at many universities in the United Kingdom and abroad.

There are lengthy sections on Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in 1947, on the "boys of summer" winning an overdue world championship in 1955, on the treacherous Walter O'Malley moving the franchise in 1958, and on Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale staging a ground-breaking holdout in 1966. Heartbreakers such as Bobby Thompson and Don Larson are of necessity mentioned, but the painful memories they evoke are more than balanced by accounts of Fernando Mania and Kirk Gibson's impossibly dramatic home run in the first game of the 1988 World Series. Dodger History Primer

Clearly 120 years of baseball seasons gives you a lot to write about. Like most LA Dodgers fans my understanding of Dodger history comes almost entirely from listening to Vin Scully announcing games. This book helps fill in the gaps.

The book is an easy read and covers all of the main events and people in Dodger history. This book is for people who want to know the Dodger history basics (and there are a lot of basics to read about). The author really hasn't uncovered anything new to write about, but he does tell a good story.

The aspects that I most enjoyed in this book are the sections covering the early Dodgers (their uniform was originally green?, Babe Ruth was a Dodgers coach for a year?), the 50s, and the Koufax/Drysdale era. The pictures chosen are good, and the essay inserts from writers who covered the Dodgers are interesting.

On the other hand, I felt some years were completely skipped over. Not much may have happened in those years, but only a couple paragraphs? The tables of stats are interesting but would have preferred them in their own section. A bibliography would have been nice. Also, there is a section at the back listing what I guess is the author's All-Time Dodgers Teams, but there are several on the list that I didn't recognize from reading the text (Tom Daly, Al Lopez?)

Overall, if you are looking for that Dodger history primer, this fits the bill. It easily could have been longer, but would not have been as good of a read.

Shameful Allegations of Bigotry

Glenn Stout's book is chock-full of unsubstantiated allegations of bigotry against key Dodger personnel. While dealing justly with the prohibition of blacks from the majors and the regrettable Campanis episode, he goes too far in accusing others of racism and anti-Semitism in the following instances:

1. Mr. O'Malley supposedly bought the Dodgers, in part, to prevent a Jew from owning a major league team. This is stated without any supporting evidence. It is particularly outlandish, because Mr. O'Malley later moved the team and his entire family across the country, built a stadium from scratch and ran the team for decades. It is not likely he would have done all this just so he could (in part) prevent a Jew from owning the team.
2. Alston supposedly wouldn't pitch Koufax early in his career because Koufax was Jewish. Again, this is stated with no evidence to back it up. The only evidence available actually contradicts this supposition, as a few years later, Alston practically worked Koufax to death over the course of several seasons.
3. While attacking white racism again blacks (sometimes justly) he repeatedly uses the phrase "lily-white" to describe certain teams. Would he ever describe a basketball team, for example, as being "jet black?" Why couldn't he write that these teams were "all-white?" No insults there. Just a factual description.
4. He accused the commissioner of being racist for declaring that Maury Wills (who was black) should have an asterisk after his record for most stolen bases in a season, because he had more games in which to get those steals, than did the old record holder Ty Cobb (who was white). Again, there is no supporting evidence. And in fact, a year or two earlier, the commissioner made the exact same ruling about the homerun record regarding Maris and Ruth, who were both white.
5. Stout also claims, again without any evidence, that the Dodgers kept switching Pedro Guerrero's field position, because they didn't know how to play an Hispanic player.

Stout also made a factual error about the famous comment by Guerrero that he hoped the other team wouldn't hit the ball to him or Steve Sax, because of their poor fielding. One of the great Dodger stories, yet Guerrero made that comment to Lasorda during a team meeting, not to a sportswriter, like Stout writes.

He also often portrays Mr. O'Malley, Alston and Lasorda as being doofuses. This is strange considering all these men accomplished. For starters, take all of the pennants and world championships they won.

But there is much good here, too. All of the above amounts to about five pages out of about 400. The rest of the book is superbly written. All eras of team history are covered, as are all of the key personnel, from the front office all the way down to us fans. Stout's writing style is entertaining: very engaging with many clever turns of phrase. If you are a true Dodger, and if you can stomach the stuff mentioned above, you will love this book. I wish I could give it 5 stars, but I will go with three.
