Exactly What I Expected From Terry Goodkind

The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) by Terry Goodkind is exactly what the title claims, the story of the Magda Searus, the first Confessor. The events played out here are a crucial part of the back story of the Sword of Truth series. As the story opens, Magda Searus has just lost her husband, First Wizard Baraccus. Feeling lost and alone, Magda sets out to commit suicide in the same manner as her husband, by throwing herself off the wall of the Keep and falling to her death a thousand feet below. At the last possible moment, she finds a note left by Baraccus, urging her to find truth. In the chapters that follow, the reader is given a closer look at the events laid out as backstory during the Sword of Truth series. How the war between the Old World and the New was first started, the making of the Sword of Truth, the hiding of the Temple of the Winds, the creation of the D'Haran bond, the dreamwalkers, the traitors in the Keep, and the reasoning behind the creation of the Confessors. And other events even further back in history are hinted at.

This was an excellent read. I've read each book by Goodkind in one sitting, and this was no exception. This book explains many of the secrets behind the Sword of Truth series and gives the characters mentioned in the series their own stories. Even though this wasn't about the main characters, Richard and Kahlan, I was just as interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. The only two problems I had with this book were that now I feel the need to go back and read the whole series again and now I want to know more about the other events mentioned in the series. Here's hoping Mr. Goodkind feels the urge to write more of the backstory.

A note about the format: The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) is a self-published e-book. Many of his loyal fans seem to be quite upset that it's only available in e-format, as they don't have the necessary e-readers. Terry Goodkind wanted to tell the story in his own way, without the limitations imposed by a publisher. Apparently, he's one of the first big name authors to venture into the realms of self-publishing. His reasons for doing so can be found on his website at terrygoodkind.com. As reviewers, we tend to shy away from author self-pubs. Many that we've read have had lots of grammatical errors, formatting issues, continuity problems, or just plain poor editing. I didn't find a single thing wrong in this book. That's not to say there aren't problems, just that I didn't find them, and I usually do. If you're leery of reading this because it's a self-pub, don't be. It could easily have been printed by any of the major publishers and I wouldn't have noticed any difference while reading it.

He's Back!

I almost didn't buy this book. Although Terry Goodkind is one of my favorite authors I found his last couple books disappointing, so I started it with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was impossible to put down. The story was fast moving, gripping and masterfully written. Mr. Goodkind will have you transported inside the Wizard's Keep while you are reading the story. I feel it is his best effort since Faith of the Fallen. It also gave we SOT series fans a better understanding of how the sword came to be and the creation of the Confessors. If this is an example of what he can do freed from the constraints of a publishing house then I hope the rest of his offerings come in the same format. I can't wait for his next book!

Read the original 11 Sword of Truth books first to avoid huge spoilers.

I was looking at a Wikipedia article about the Sword of Truth series and I noted that the books are listed there according to the series' internal chronology. That puts this book first on the list because it's a prequel. I suspect, therefore, that some of these reviews may be read by people who are new to the Sword of Truth series, who are thinking about starting to read these books, and who want to see what other readers think before taking the plunge. I therefore feel it's crucial to admonish those people: DO NOT BEGIN WITH THIS BOOK. Read the original 11 books (starting with Wizard's First Rule and continuing through to Confessor) BEFORE you even CONSIDER reading this one. This book contains information that would constitute MASSIVE SPOILERS for the original series if you read this one first. Actually, simply putting the word "massive" in all caps doesn't really do it justice. I'm trying to think of a way to describe how important it is to avoid the spoilers and one example that comes to mind is how if you watched the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy before the original three movies, the "I am your father" plot twist in "The Empire Strikes Back" wouldn't contain any suspense at all. Remember how people wondered for three years whether Darth Vader was telling the truth? If you'd seen the prequels first, you'd already know the answer. But I'd argue that reading "The First Confessor" before the original Sword of Truth series would expose you to spoilers on a far greater level than you'd find in the Star Wars context. That's how important the backstory contained in this book is. You'd ruin huge portions of the story. Don't ruin it for yourself. Read the original series first and then you can read the four companion volumes (this one, Debt of Bones, The Omen Machine, and The Law of Nines) in any order you like.

With that said, I should comment on the book itself. The paragraph above makes it obvious that I've read all the books. I rate this one higher than Law of Nines and Omen Machine, but I don't rate it as highly as the earliest books in the original series (say, the first four books through Temple of the Winds). I appreciated the backstory to the original series and the book kept me reading to find out how the result would come about. That is, because it's a prequel I knew how the story had to end, but I wanted to know how it would reach that end. Last night I kept reading until just before 1:00 AM, to the point where my wife kicked me out of the bedroom so she could sleep with the lights out. That's how much I wanted to keep going.

I would have given this book four stars because I greatly enjoyed reading it, but I've taken a one-star deduction off my rating for two reasons. First, I think this book exhibits a style that unfortunately came to plague some of Terry Goodkind's work as the Sword of Truth series stretched on, and that style consists of too many long speeches. How best to explain this? Some writers tell you the story of the characters actually solving their problems and battling their nemeses. You see when the figurative lightbulb clicks on for them and you understand why. Terry Goodkind's work isn't like that these days. Instead, he tells you that the character saw what had to be done, but he doesn't tell you what has to be done or why. Instead, it happens (sometimes explained, sometimes not) and then the character gives a long oration explaining what he did and how he figured it out. It's almost like ex post facto explanation. That can be quite dissatisfying. Second, I think he's taken to letting the characters find the solutions too quickly. In the original Sword of Truth story arc, Mr. Goodkind put his characters through the wringer at times. He tortured them. They went through massive emotional agony. He doesn't seem to do that anymore and the characters are almost too good at quickly realizing the solutions to their problems. No doubt part of that is the shorter length of his newer books. This Kindle e-book didn't contain page numbers, so I can't compare its length to the original 11 books (all of which I have in paper format), but I tore through it far more quickly than I did any of the original books. It's inevitable that with a shorter book you have to resolve matters more quickly. But the quick resolution makes me feel like the characters' natural human flaws are glossed over or ignored. We all have foibles and flaws. It's human nature. It makes a story less plausible when characters' flaws don't hinder them in a meaningful way.

In sum, I enjoyed reading this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who read and enjoyed the main Sword of Truth story arc. But the book has flaws and I don't think I'd be giving a fair review if I ignored them. The flaws didn't prevent me from enjoying the book, but I think they did hinder the book from being as good as it could have been.

KATE T. PARKER is a mother, wife, former collegiate soccer player, Ironman, and professional photographer who shoots both fine art projects and commercial work for clients across North America. Her Strong Is the New Pretty photo series has led to collaborations with brands like Athleta, Kellogg’s, Oxygen, and Girls on the Run. The project has also inspired Kate to launch a philanthropic arm of Strong Is the New Pretty, partnering with organizations that invest in girls’ health and education. CONFIDENT IS STRONG
In the workforce, women earn an estimated average of just seventy-nine cents for every dollar their male counterparts make. In sports broadcasting, female athletic competitions represent 5 percent of the allotted
airtime. And in film and television, female protagonists make up only 12 percent of cinematic roles. Tell that to Kekai, with the determined stare (page 27) or Caroline, with her unwavering poise as she balances on pointe (page 15). These girls are intelligent and clever, talented and strong—and they know it. They are confident. And they offer hope, too—hope that the inequity will disappear as this generation of girls grows into adulthood.�

The confidence that they display in these photos will push them through the times when they feel hesitant or unsure or nervous. Confidence will push them, period. The challenge is in holding on to this power, this confidence, so they can help fuel the change that the world needs.

Do them a favor and remind these girls of their strength. Remind each other of your strength. Often. Write it down if you need to: the ways in which you are smart, the ways in which you are qualified, the ways in which you are strong. Put them on your wall, say them out loud—internalize them. My daughters felt inspired reading this book

After getting the book today, both my young daughters kept begging me to read additional pages and both separately asked if they could be the ones to keep it in their room to read before falling asleep. I thought it would be a good coffee table book in our house, but had no idea it would resonate with them quite that much. I purchased it after my youngest experienced some bullying at school after getting a pixie (very short) haircut that she was very proud about. I loved that the intro to the book happened to talk about girls and short hair cuts. After going through many pages of the book, my daughter asked if I could take photos of her being strong and she could write about how she is strong. So glad to have come across this book!

This book is just amazing. The photography is beautiful, and the short and simple quotes from all the girls are powerful. I love the few paragraphs of vision for each section, as well. It's a perfect book to flip through for encouragement and inspiration for any girl.

Amazing book for new and experienced Product Owners

This is a book for people who want to take their Product Ownership Skills to the next level. I would also recommend it for Scrum Masters who coach Product Owners. What I particularly like about the book is - similar to the book Scrum Mastery - Geoff's approach using "good to great". Even as an experienced PO myself I saw at many sections, that I am rather in the good dimension of Product Ownership and how I can move to great. As a Certified Scrum Trainer I give Geoff's books to my participants... I believe this says enough about the quality of this book. A big THANK YOU to Geoff.

Joe Azelby is the managing director and CEO of the Global Real Assets Group of a large financial firm, leading a team of more than 400 investment professionals. Kiss Your But Goodbye Rises Above The Rest!

I don't write reviews very often, so when I do, you know I feel passionately about a product. On that note, Kiss Your But Goodbye is hands down the best advice book I have ever read. Not to mention, it is the PERFECT book for people of all ages and work environments. As a person just starting out in my career, I am going to use this book as my own handbook throughout the rest of my life. It will apply to me today as much as it will when I am CEO of a Fortune 500 company (did I mention this book also gave me a lot of confidence about what will happen once I conquer my "buts"?). Joe and Bob Azelby's references are just as funny as they are current, which appealed to this pop-culture fan, and at no time was the content dull or boring (like many other books I have read).

I honestly cannot recommend this book enough and I hope the Azelbys will write additional books to help me deal with the other aspects of my life. Going to the grocery store? I bet Joe and Bob could help me shop the aisles better. Here's to hoping there are a lot more books where this comes from!

You Need to Read this Book!

Kiss Your But Good-Bye was the most useful personal development book I have read. It is funny, an easy read and memorable. I am still laughing at some of the stories. The beauty and genius of the book is that the concepts described can be readily used to improve your staff, yourself and the company as a whole. While most business books recognize that the most valuable asset in a company is its people, I have not read any that explain in such a straightforward way how to improve people’s effectiveness and worth. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to remove the factors which hold them back in business world or help others to succeed. What you learn will make work and life more enjoyable and profitable.

About the Author

Len Bass is a senior principal researcher at National ICT Australia Ltd. (NICTA). He joined NICTA in 2011 after 25 years at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the coauthor of two award-winning books in software architecture—Software Architecture in Practice, Third Edition (Addison-Wesley 2013) and Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley 2011)—as well as several other books and numerous papers in computer science and software engineering on a wide range of topics. Len has more than 50 years’ experience in software development and research, which has resulted in papers on operating systems, database man�agement systems, user interface software, software architecture, product line sys�tems, and computer operations. He has worked or consulted in multiple domains, including scientific analysis, embedded systems, and information and financial systems.

Ingo Weber is a senior researcher in the Software Systems Research Group at NICTA in Sydney, Australia, as well as an adjunct senior lecturer at CSE at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Prior to NICTA, Ingo held posi�tions at UNSW and at SAP Research Karlsruhe, Germany. His research interests include cloud computing, DevOps, business process management, and artificial intelligence (AI). He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, and served as a reviewer or program committee member for many prestigious scientific jour�nals and conferences. Ingo holds a Ph.D. and a Diploma from the University of Karlsruhe, and an MSc from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Liming Zhu is a research group leader and principal researcher at NICTA. He holds conjoint positions at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Sydney. Liming has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers. He formerly worked in several technology lead positions in the software industry before obtaining a Ph.D. in software engineering from UNSW. He is a committee member of the Standards Australia IT-015 (system and software engineering), contributing to ISO/SC7. Liming’s research interests include software architec�ture and dependable systems.

DevOps Reality - Not DevOps the buzzword

This is the first DevOps book that shows a realistic and achievable view of the full implementation of DevOps. Most of the books and other literature I have read on DevOps are all about the culture, the attitudes, how it relates to Agile and Lean practices, and a high level view of microservices. This book includes all that, but they are not its main focus, and it goes several steps further with respect to the architecture and infrastructure needed for the implementation.

The book is broken down into 5 parts. I have listed each part below along with the chapters they include.

The first chapter introduces DevOps and puts it into context with respect to the rest of the book. The definition of DevOps the authors provide focuses on the goals, rather than the means-

DevOps is a set of practices intended to reduce the time between committing a change to a system and the change being placed into normal production, while ensuring high quality.

They also identify five different categories of DevOps practices that help define their definition of DevOps. I have repeated them below.
1. Treat Ops as first-class citizens from the point of view of requirements.
2. Make Dev more responsible for relevant incident handling.
3. Enforce the deployment process used by all, including Dev and Ops personnel.
4. Use continuous deployment.
5. Develop infrastructure code, such as deployment scripts, with the same set of practices as application code.

Chapter 1 also talks about the reduction of coordination and different barriers that can present themselves. The barriers include the culture, type of organization, the goals operations verses development, silo mentality, tool support, and personnel issue such as the difference in salaries between developers and operation staff. Moving operation tasks to a developers plate may not make much sense if the time to do the task is not drastically reduced.

Chapter 2 gives a nice introduction to using a cloud environment as a platform. The way in which this book describes the implementation of DevOps, the cloud is a key component.

The chapter does a really great job of introducing a ton of material in a very concise way. They start by introducing and discussing the characteristics of the cloud- on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service.

Chapter 2 also covers the 3 types of service - Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The authors go into detail of how the cloud impacts DevOps - the ability to create and switch environments simply, the ability to create VMs easily, and the management of databases.

Chapter 3 is a discussion of the core concepts and phases of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and how traditional IT Ops and DevOps interact.

Part 2 covers the deployment pipeline. This part is where the microservice architectural style is covered. Deploying, monitoring, debugging, performance management, testing, and team skills are all different than what most development teams are going to be used to. Most teams will not be able to achieve instancing a microservice architecture, for various reasons, but there are some really good practices in this part of the book that teams can achieve.

I just got done researching microservices and NServiceBus. I came to the conclusion I would not be able to move in that direction in my current environment. Although team skills where of some concern, the culture is what killed the possibility. It is a command and control environment that is anything but transparent. In order to make such a fundamental shift in the way things are done there would have to be major changes. The environment allows for no agile or lean practices, although it claims to be agile, and is completely closed to change.

Certain parts of the book may come across as completely academic and unrealistic, but depending on your environment all best practices and software development principles written by the gurus of our profession may be unrealistic. Do yourself a favor and push through. The case studies do a great job of taking the first three part of the book and showing how organizations are doing their best to move towards a DevOps environment.

I thought the case studies were very thorough, maybe even too thorough. Although I think SEI's books contain some of the most important information that has been released in our industry, their books are not always the easiest to read. For as short as this one is, it took me quite a while. A lot of that was my schedule, but not all of it.

I can tell you from experience that most of the places I go think the same thing about all of SEI's materials. They mostly view it as purely academic. They are wrong. The places that have allowed me to practice the processes found in Software Product Lines: Practices and Patterns, Software Architecture in Practice, Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond, Software Systems Architecture: Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives, CMMI for Development, and The CERT Guide to Insider Threats, have seen how well their advice works. Places that don't allow me to apply the practices only did themselves a disservice because I did them anyway. It is the only way I know how to successfully build complex software successfully.

For those places that micromanaged my activities to make sure I was not wasting time documenting or planning I had to tell - Find someone else to do it. I don't know how to build something wrong, and I have no interest in learning how to. Right now in my current environment they would love me to come in, sit down, shut up, and just go with the flow. The problem with that is the flow is currently taking us down a toilet hole, so I have no choice but to go against the flow!

If DevOps can make it across the chasm you will be very happy to have the material found in this book in your arsenal of knowledge.

As an enterprise architect working exclusively in the cloud, I find this book spot on for my needs. I especially like the fact the book addresses the deployment pipeline in detail, covering topics from microservices to integration testing to partial deployments and rollbacks. This may be common knowledge to some, but as an architect focused primarily on data an analytics, it is a concise and useful resource.

The first couple of chapters gives a solid overview of DevOps and cloud computing. The cloud computing chapter covers key points enough to orient the reader unfamiliar with features of the cloud. Part Two addresses the deployment pipeline followed by a section on monitoring, security and business considerations. The discussion of what to monitor in Chapter 7 helps breakdown a complex operation into manageable areas. My only suggestion to the authors, if they were to publish a second edition, is to add more network security control discussion to Chapter 8. The chapter is solid, I'd just like more. (This may be my own bias from working in healthcare where you can't get up for a cup of coffee without thinking about HIPAA regulations). I appreciate Chapter 12 on continuous deployment and Chapter 13 on microservices. The presentation is just right for getting a good overall picture and I feel like I can easily dig deeper into references in the Further Reading section at the end of the chapters.

The book is not a quick read. The substance is in the text. Often times, I find I can readily read through a few chapters in a book but not this one. Each chapter deserves a little time to settle in before moving on to the next topic. I noticed another reviewer commented on the lack of information content of the diagrams. I thought there were relatively few diagrams for a book of its length, but those that were included tended to be high level but relevant to the text.

This is one of a dozen or so books I keep on my shelf at work. It's one of the two that ever gets borrowed. (The other is on Python and analytics).

A Cloud Architect's View on DevOps

Len and team present a systematic, architecture-centric view to what is needed to support a DevOps culture. The outline of the book follows almost chronologically the building and deployment of an application, from building and test (ch 5) to deployment (ch 6). monitoring (ch 7). There is ample detail, including how to failover to a backup data center including your data replication, DNS switch-over etc. The book also mentions specific products (mostly open source) for implementation, which gives it a good grounding in reality.

You can trust the SEI titles to be thorough, if even a tad encyclopedic -- you fill find the book contains a lot of checklists or lists of elements of a system. This makes for an excellent reference, but occasionally requires some discipline from the reader. So you may read the parts that are important to you as opposed to the whole book cover to cover.

The title certainly capitalized on the DevOps buzz. Much of the book is really about building systems for and running them in the cloud. I would say that without the cloud we would not have DevOps, so the choice of title is justifiable imho. As always, it's important to read the subtitle, too, which explains that this is a book about architecture.

I found it particularly refreshing that the book is "only" 300 pages, but packs an enormous amount of information into those pages. This is a welcome contrast to those 800 page tomes that tend to repeat themselves over and over and often copy whole chapters from prior books by the same author.

Disclosure: as a fellow Pearson author, I received a complimentary copy of the book. In my opinion, the list price ($39.99) is actually very reasonable for the amount of content Len and team squeezed in here.
