A History of Psychology: From Antiquity To Modernity, 7th Edition, by Thomas Leahey

Provides a narrative history of psychology. A History of Psychology: From Antiquity to Modernity begins tracking psychology from the development of folk psychology as the key adaptation of humans at the dawn of history. It then traces the Classical, medieval, and early modern periods to present day psychology. The text covers scientific, applied, and professional psychology.

Although theoretical and empirical arguments inside psychology about the nature of mind and behavior are not neglected, A History of Psychology shows how psychology's development has been shaped by social, economic, and political forces external to it, and, in turn, how the mature psychology of the late 20th century has begun to shape the society in which it arose. The text carefully examines how issues in psychology reflect and affect concepts that lie outside the technical concerns of psychology as a science and profession.

Upon completing this text, readers will be able to:

  • Know the events in the history of scientific, applied, and professional psychology
  • Understand how psychology,s development was shaped by external forces
  • Describe how psychology has and continues to shape society

get it--use it
By A. Wakefield
Leaheys book is by far my preference of the history of psych textbooks (I've also examined Brennan's and Kendler's books). I use the book for personal reading and to give a sense of history and develppment to other courses. His book is especially notable for considering a wide variety of psychological ideas, and its consideration of the interaction of cultures, societies, and psychology. the only reason I give it four stars is because it's not quite as exciting as a novel and I want to see certain sections expanded - (eg. the intellectual-cultural roots of founding psychologists in Germany and Vienna) - but the bibliographies are especially meaty for a textbook.

The most intelectually satisfying of the Histories of Psychology
By R. SA NOGUEIRA SARAIVA
This is the only major textbook that really tries to cover the undercurrent of ideas that gave rise to modern Psychology. Other books may be easier (not that this book is difficult) to read or even to claim to be more profund, but this one is the only one that does not simplify the ideas to the point of caricature and does not plunge too deeply into side-issues.

Also, this book has no flesh and blood heroes -- no one author is presented as such. The real protagonists are ideas, concepts and world views. Read in this light, the book is every bit as fascinating as a "who done it".

While the analysis of pre-20th Century and European Psychology could be developed and expanded, I consider the explanation of the origin of behaviorism and cognitivism really revealing and masterful.

Leahey links them to a single world view (and I think he is more right than wrong) and stresses that both perspectives derive from the North-American view of Science and Mind (or lack of it). Cognitivism is a new version of behaviorism, and not a revolutionary new view of Psychology.

The book is very well written, and the few redundant parts are unavoidable in such a large book and in such a large field of study.

As a suggestion for future development I would like to propose: Ethology (mainly Uexkull and Lorenz), Piaget, Gestalt and the overall more of less Kant-inspired European visions of Mind and Behavior.

For anyone who is considering to teach the 'History of Psychology' course, I think this book is a must read; for any psychologist that wants to know why he uses his methodology and his ideas, this is even a more important book.

Five stars, a really good book. Hearty congratulations and a very sincere 'thank you' to T.H. Leahey.

In-depth externalist history
By Arthur Blumenthal
Thomas Leahey's History of Psychology has long been the preferred text for the graduate-level history of psychology course at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at the New School University in New York. The reasons are its intellectual depth and challenge (appropriate for graduate students) that exceeds other texts; its unsurpassed attentiveness to a wide range of historical scholarship; its emphasis on a strong externalist (contextual) analysis of the history of psychology (especially appropriate here at The New School); and its suitability for separating the serious scholars among the graduate students from those who are not that committed to the intellectual life. The course this book serves plays a strong role in determining which students will continue on in the Ph.D. program. As with any history book for this huge and diverse field scholars will be able to argue about an emphasis or interpretation or omission here and there. But there is no more intellectually spirited writing at the high-end of the currently in press history-of-psychology texts than is found in this book. Some students cave in under the challenge of the book. The truly bright, interested, and motivated students, however, really shine when they study it.

The Natural, by Bernard Malamud

The classical novel (and basis for the acclaimed film) now in a new edition

Introduction by Kevin Baker

The Natural, Bernard Malamud's first novel, published in 1952, is also the first―and some would say still the best―novel ever written about baseball. In it Malamud, usually appreciated for his unerring portrayals of postwar Jewish life, took on very different material―the story of a superbly gifted "natural" at play in the fields of the old daylight baseball era―and invested it with the hardscrabble poetry, at once grand and altogether believable, that runs through all his best work. Four decades later, Alfred Kazin's comment still holds true: "Malamud has done something which―now that he has done it!―looks as if we have been waiting for it all our lives. He has really raised the whole passion and craziness and fanaticism of baseball as a popular spectacle to its ordained place in mythology."

Amazon.com Review
Roy Hobbs, the protagonist of The Natural, makes the mistake of pronouncing aloud his dream: to be the best there ever was. Such hubris, of course, invites divine intervention, but the brilliance of Bernard Malamud's novel is the second chance it offers its hero, elevating him--and his story--into the realm of myth.

Review

“A brilliant and unusually fine novel.” ―The New York Times

“A preposterously readable story about life.” ―Time

“Malamud [holds a] high and honored place among contemporary American writers.” ―Washington Post Book World

“The finest novel about baseball since Ring Lardner left the scene.” ―St. Louis Post-Dispatch

By Amazon Customer
After seeing the movie several times I decided to get the book so I could draw some comparisons. Much to my surprise I discovered that the author had drawn much information from actual lives and events---some accurate, others off base. Reading it carefully I found myself making notes on various aspects, and I shall set forth some of them.
First, Roy Hobbs himself. To be sure, he was not a very nice person; I found myself thinking of Ted Williams---who said again and again he wanted to be the best he was, the greatest hitter who ever lived---and, going farther back, to one Tyrus Raymond Cobb whose early life had a tremendous impact on the player---and man---he became. In spite of his terrible temper Williams, however, was more of a human being; I used to enjoy reading about his conversations with other players, particularly one pitcher for whom he had great respect (he even let this pitcher use some of his bats!) Not so Hobbs.
There was one scene, both in the book and in the movie, that had me laughing fit to split and still does, because it continues to put me in mind of an actual episode concerning those misbegotten St. Louis Browns circa 1949-1950---and an experiment that failed miserably. Briefly: the Browns had taken up residence in the cellar, and the front office decided they had to do something about it. You would think they would get a few players who new how to play the game, maybe a couple of coaches---even a new manager---but no. They went ahead and hired a psychologist in the hope that he could hypnotize this miserable team out of their doldrums. It didn't work. The psychologist was probably very good in other areas, but when it came to working with hypnosis---he was, in the words of a great pitcher with a great team in the American League East, a "one-trick pony" who had one technique that he ran into the ground. Of course it didn't work; this psychologist failed to consider that what was sauce for the goose was not necessarily sauce for the gander! No wonder Roy Hobbs got up and left, the manager chased after him, and Hobbs practically snarled at him "I signed a contract to play baseball, not for those shenanigans!" Well, the Browns started the 1950 season in the cellar; in May of that year they managed to win four games but still ended up in the cellar---so they fired that psychologist, and a couple of years later they moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. (Incidentally, I knew that pitcher quite well; he had a good working knowledge of how to use hypnosis and a few other tricks up his sleeve besides that arm.)
Mr. Malamud devotes a great deal of space to the whys and wherefores of the hitting slump, and one can gain much from a careful reading of this section. He also devotes a great deal of space to Roy Hobbs' eating proclivities, and one must mention the great Babe Ruth who was perhaps the first of the great "fressers"---and here I must say something about a third baseman named Andy Carey who ate and ate and ate and where did it all go? (He probably had an extremely high metabolism, unlike the Babe and Mr. Hobbs.) And, of course, he discusses Hobbs the poor fish who went looking for love---or was it lust?---in all the wrong places and what became of him; there is indeed a huge difference between the ending of the book and the ending of the film, and the reader is invited to take his or her pick. Again I think of one Theodore Samuel Williams and one Tyrus Raymond Cobb, and how both of them came to grips with their personalities. Fascinating reading indeed.

Darker than the movie
By Richard Bon
I've loved the movie for many years and finally got around to reading the book. Certainly the book proves darker than the movie and shows the movie, beloved as it is, to be as "hollywoodized" as the best of them. Hobbs' character in the movie, portrayed by Robert Redford as so calm, poised, stoic, and generally kind is a lot different in the book - wild, emotional, reactive, and not particularly nice. Whereas in the movie, Hobbs' moral fortitude is unbreakable, in the book he wavers before eventually remaining true to his ideals.

On a side note, I'm not sure if Malamud was going for humor when he describes the massive amounts of food Hobbs consumes on some evenings in the book, particularly at the ill fated party toward the book's end, but I found his diet absurd.

My students love it!
By Nicole
I love Roy Hobbs! I use this in my English 11 classes, and they love it. Roy is a complex character that my kids relate to, and they get frustrated when Roy keeps making poor decisions. We use it to talk about the hero's journey, and it is very effective.

For any teachers out there, I made a study guide to go along with the book since it's very difficult to find a lot of teaching materials to go with it. It's on Teachers Pay Teachers. Shameless plug, I know.

rented for class
By Tiffany
worked very well, received on time and was able to extend the renting time length. I was upset with my teacher for changing the Edition required, but there were very little changes and was able to get my work done.

Excellent inspiration for scaling your experiments down
By enrico
Yes it is an expensive book, but it will lower your expenses on chemicals considerably. And it is always good to get a new look on "old" experiments. Helps to create your own versions on new experiments.

Excellent Historical Biography
By K.A.Goldberg
Author David Halberstam (1934-2007) mixes biography, sports diary, and NBA business history in these superbly readable pages. Halberstam focus heavily on Jordan's last year with the Chicago Bulls (1997-98) as he also covers Michael from childhood thru superstardom. Readers learn about Jordan's middle-class upbringing in a family of strong values, his college days at North Carolina where coach Dean Smith insisted on sportsmanship, and his appealing persona (and interracial friendships) that predated his athletic stardom. Then we follow Jordan's career with the Chicago Bulls (including six championships), his baseball hiatus, and his stunning marketability for Nike and other sponsors. The author includes some revealing tidbits about teammates like Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman, plus competing stars like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. There is also a business history, one showing how the rise of cable television and 24-hour sports media affected Jordan, other top stars, plus the NBA as a whole. Possessed with fanatical determination and competitiveness, Jordan demanded much from his teammates (and himself), and could at times be difficult and rough. Also, his wide appeal came partly from his modest height, which let fans identify with him in a way they couldn't with taller stars. Halberstam does make a couple minor factual errors, but overall this is an excellent and business-savvy biography.
