WOW. Amazing History & a Worldwide Selection of Pastas & Sauces!!

Amazing book, just amazing.It arrived quite quickly, vis USPS & well packed in a USPS box.
I had bought my BRILLIANT RED ATLAS 150 WELLLNESS PASTA MACHINE, without knowing how to make a variety of the Worlds Perfect Pasta Doughs.. I am astounded at the varierty of dough recipes, and the multiple step by step (breath by breath) photos helping you, hand by hand, thru the process...& giving you full page/plate photos of the finished products..You can almost see the heat rising from the plate, smell the aromas.. I cannot wait to use this book. At the time I ordered this book, I bought the LAST ONE Amazon had.

Best Cookbook for Beginner's

This book has everything a beginner could want, easy, clear instructions, lot's have how-to illustrations and a very nice selection of recipes. It covers everything pasta. I bought it used, the best $14 I have spent in years. I spent 4 yrs in Italy and traveled extensively throughout the country, still, there are sauces I never even heard of or tried. There are so many pasta and sauce recipes, I can't wait to try or that I now know how to make.I really look forward to the weekends because it's the only time I really have to try everything. Even though my kitchen is a messy disaster area by Sunday evening, I am having fun!

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the basics about pastas, an all the history behind the origins an all. I like the references, an all the information contained in this book, I truly recommend trying out this pasta book! You will be very pleased an your family will love the product of your endeavors, an knowing how to make them by hand is truly appreciated by your family when they eat your makings from this book.

If You Have Children, You Must Read This Book

I appreciated the valuable information about brain development, how children learn, how we can help them, what real education and learning are all about, and the things we do that hinder brain development.

I assigned it to my teens for part of the homeschooling program, and they enjoyed it so much they recommend it to friends, too.

Jane Healy writes well, and she makes a lot of sense. Reading this book also helped us understand why one of our children has some of the learning issues she has. I just can't recommend it highly enough.

Excellent book!

After enjoying Endangered Minds years ago as part of a developmental psychology class, I am now a parent myself and was anxious to read this book. I feel this book provides accessible neuroscience for caregivers who want to understand how brain development progresses and what a growing mind NEEDS as it matures. Ms. Healy provides a lot of practical information and tips, based on research and her experience as a learning specialist, for what we can do to provide the best environment and stimuli for our children's learning at the various stages. For instance, my husband now understands that our baby needs lots of physical and sensory play at this stage of his life - his brain simply isn't ready to "read" or participate in the type of learning that some programs advocate to help one's child get a leg-up on schooling. I would recommend this book to anyone who participates in the care of children. Enjoy!

Not for me

The author of this book is firmly against teaching a young child to read, but doesn't offer much to support her argument. She did mention one study where children learned better at age 7 than at age 5 using the same reading method. Clearly this is not the same as studying preschool aged children (or younger) who learn to read in a home environment.

Most of her conclusions are from her own anecdotal experiences. The problem with this is that she works with children with reading difficulties which likely has skewed her view on the subject. That is, she sees when there are problems, but, what about the children who are successful at learning to read at a young age? She will not have had a chance to meet these children.

One particular example she gave was of a mother who tried to teach her young daughter to read and did not allow her to make mistakes. The child, understandably, was terrified of reading. But, was it the early teaching or the mother's attitude that caused this girl's reading problems? I think it is obvious this girl would have been terrified of reading at any age.

She did have some good points and I agree that children should not be forced into learning. I think most parents, and experts for that matter, think of teaching as laborious, boring, and tedious for which young kids do not have the attention span. Clearly if this is how you teach your child then you should not do it. But, if you do it in a relaxed, fun, child lead way then young children are not only capable of learning, but they eat it up.

After reading this book I happened to read an article written by Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, on early reading. He taught his son to read starting just before he turned two and his son is now quite advanced for his age. I was surprised to see him mention this book in particular. He points out where he agrees and disagrees with the points in the book. His article is very well written and includes relevant research and also anecdotal evidence to support his point that young children can learn to read and that teaching them may even be beneficial. His article can be purchased on Amazon in kindle format but it is also available for free on his blog. It is called: How and Why I Taught My Toddler to Read. If you like hearing both sides of an argument I recommend it.

What I particularly did not like about the book was her condescending tone towards parents who teach their children, as if parents who teach their children are trying to make them into super children to prop up their own egos. I think most parents just want what is best for our children which is why we chose to read her book in the first place. I think it is a poor assumption on the author's part to assume that if you actively teach your child you are doing it to satisfy your own ego.

"It matters what you call a thing."

“Until now, now that I’ve reached my thirties: / All my Muse’s poetry has been harmless: / American and diplomatic.” It’s hard not to hear underpinning this passage, which opens the poem “Desired Appreciation,” the suggestion that for something to be accepted as American it must go along with the current, must uphold the status quo—the exact opposite of how art functions, which is by disruption. And lest there be any misunderstanding, I’ll clarify—Solmaz Sharif’s Look is a book that disrupts, fervently and effectively. The poems within are allergic to complacency and linguistic hypnosis; they constantly reach, inquire, prod, and wonder—sometimes with force—and refuse to allow the reader to be lulled into the sense that everything is okay in the world.

The first words of Look make the author’s intents known in no uncertain terms: “It matters what you call a thing.” Unflinching is a term overused when describing writers, particularly poets, but if there’s a book deserving of this phrase, it’s Look; Solmaz Sharif is insistent that the reader understand that there is something awry, something lurking below the surface level of today’s media and discourse, and she’s going after it without hesitation.

The poems in Look are interested in challenging the way we hear about and consider war by dismantling the language used when describing or reporting on it. Formally, the poems are concerned with euphemistic language; thematically, they target large-scale complacency with war. When these two tie together is where the book derives its tension and strength

The Book We Needed Before 9/11

In Jonathan Schell’s The Military Half, he discusses how the U.S. army used language to dampen the awful violence they were inflicting on Vietnamese civilians. “Hootch” was slang for a Vietnamese house. The more proper military term for a Vietnamese person’s home was a “structure.” It’s fun to burn a hootch; a duty to bomb a structure; unbearable to destroy someone’s home. The language desensitized the soldiers, so that they could joke about killing children, pregnant women, and the disabled and elderly without facing reality.

My point is that our military’s issue with language goes way back. Words matter – these layers of euphemisms make way for real violence that harms real people. Solmaz Sharif offers a creative way to think about the effect that language has. She takes the words out of the perpetrators’ mouths and flings them back; she carves those words open and exposes the awful truths that lie inside.

In “Inspiration Point, Berkeley,” she starts with, “Consider Kissinger: / the honorary Globetrotter / of Harlem who spins on fingertip / the world as balloon, the buffoon / erected and be-plaqued here … ” We honor a man with the blood of millions on his hands, and she compares this ingeniously to how “the conquistadors dropped /armored mission after armored mission after saints - / Luis Obispo, Francisco, etc.”

Later in “Dependers/Immediate Family,” she discusses the violent hypermasculinity that parents instill in their (male) children, preparing them for war from the start, because they’ve been convinced that’s the honorable, patriotic way to raise a kid: “At the WWII Memorial, FDR thanks women / for sacrificing their sons / and their nylons.” And later: “Your crib, your teddy bears, / I want to say mother put a GUN / there, blocks and blocks of boys / with pistols in their lunch pails.”

I have become convinced of the urgent importance of war poetry – of poems that expose or explore meaningful, tangible topics – of poems that offer new lenses through which to view these topics. Solmaz Sharif gives us new tools for thinking about U.S. presence in the Middle East, and what it means when a military can't use words that have direct meaning. I wish this collection had been available to us years ago.

Like all art that's truly haunted me

5 stars, 500 stars, the whole of the Milky Way. I've never read a collection so conceptually well executed while so emotionally devastating. These poems are moving, eviscerating; they are lamentations, catalogs of both brutality and intimacy. Like all art that's truly haunted me, these poems made me upset, uncomfortable for what they make me question in my own presumptions and views. Calling a book 'important' feels like such a cliche these days, but this book is.

Sad but True

It is funny telling of what it is like to be a Nerd Otaku teenager trying to cope with living with "Normals." Sad but true humorous look at being different while growing up with "norms." The pain that most people do not see! There is some happiness is pursuing their interests, but being different hurts! I keep reading in the hope that Tomoko-San will find peace!

Great Historical Piece... But Accuracy is Questionable

I wish I had some good things to say about this book, but I really don't. More than anything it reads like a historical document as opposed to offering any fresh ideas on search engine's or search engine marketing. Rife with outdated technologies and solutions, this book is in dire need of an update, not just a republishing.

I spent most of my time skimming through this book looking for anything currently relevant on the search engine landscape. I did find their discussion of the "engine behind Google's search technology".

"PigeonRankTM is a system for ranking web pages developed by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Standford University. Brin argued that low-cost pigeon clusters (PCs) could be used to compute the relative value of web pages faster than human editors or machine-based algorithms."

You can read more about PigeonRank on Google's website. Unlike the authors of this book, who appear to take PigeonRank at face value, you might want to read the small print at the bottom of the page:

"Note: This page was posted for April Fool's Day - 2002."

I'll concede that the above note may not have been on the page back when this book was published, it was common knowledge in the SEO community that this was, in fact, an April Fool's prank.

Marketing Through Search Optimization does provide a pretty detailed narrative of the history of search engines, in general. Though one must take that with a grain of salt once you consider the depth of research that was put into the PigeonRank section.

In all, the strategies listed nothing new or that isn't readily available for free online. Some of their methods cross the line into spamming territory, though they also concede that too much of certain practices are likely to get you banned.

Finally, the end of the book lists a number of tools of the trade. Many of them might be helpful tools, on the current SEO landscape, however many of them are simply spam generators, some of which have been singled-out by Google as such.

Good book, has really helped me achieve greater rankings

I bought this book a couple of months ago, and put all the advice into practice on my website. The results have been great and my ranking is continuing to grow. The book is well written and contains a great range of practical advice and information on getting your site ranked highly. The Chapter on Link Strategies is particularly good, this is an area that I had not really considered before reading this book, and it now makes up a considerable part of my search engine strategy.

Buy this book if you want a competitive advantage in your search engine strategy.

Great Starter, falls short for the aspiring professional

This book is good for a newcomer to search engine optimization, but anyone who has been working on promoting a website will already know or assume all of the information in this book. If you are brand new to SEO then this book is a good starting point, but otherwise spend your time browsing the web or using SEO descussion forums, because the information will be more current and more in debth.
