About the Author

David Haber, PhD , is an assistant professor in the Gerontology Department at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Oregon. Prior to his current affiliation he worked at several institutes of higher education.

For a decade he was the John and Janice Fisher distinguished professor of wellness and gerontology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. For the decade prior to that, Dr. Haber was a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before that he served as the director of the Center for Healthy Aging, at Creighton University’s multidisciplinary shopping mall–based geriatric center in Omaha, Nebraska.

His early academic and research career included positions at the University of the District of Columbia; the University of South Florida, Tampa; and the University of Southern California, where he also received his PhD in sociology from the Andrus Gerontology Center.

Dr. Haber is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, and he is recognized for two Best Practice Awards from the National Council on Aging, the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Molly Mettler Award for Leadership in Health Promotion from the National Council on Aging.

The third edition of this book, Health Promotion and Aging, was selected for the 2004 Book of the Year Award by theAmerican Journal of Nursing in two categories: Gerontologic Nursing, and Community and Public Health. Dr. Haber also authored Health Care for an Aging Society.

Dr. Haber has authored 87 academic publications and has been project director or principal investigator of 20 research or demonstration grants related to health and aging. Typically, these applied projects involved gerontology and health professional students leading community health promotion ventures with older adults. Dr. Haber’s current interest in life is cat therapy with frail elders.

Exquisite tome

Oh yeah this bad boy is just dripping with beef sauce, definitely, if you're a bespectacled or would-be bespectacled intellectual who loves a nice deep bite into European History and its many, chunky layers, and you don't mind getting your spectacles all bespectacled, this is your book. This man must really have spent years in a library because this book is so in-depth I don't even know what to think. It's a really crazy book.

A FUN READ

The World's Weirdest Places by Nick Redfern is a book I could hardly put down! It is very readable and each chapter takes a different kind of weird place and describes it. The stories and tales of aliens, UFO's, ghosts, etc. are fascinating, and he tells several about each place, as well as giving the location and some of the history of what has happened there. If you are a thrill seeker, you can use his Index to plan your next exciting trip! If you are a timid traveler, use this book to see the places to avoid, even if you have to take circuitous routes (like some of the planes and ships that decide to by-pass the Bermuda Triangle...one of his first chapters!) I like to read about weird places and occurances, but I never knew there are so many in the world. He has 25 intriguing chapters about places around the world (and some near YOU!) A FUN READ!

Yet another winner by Redfern

Nick Redfern fans won't be disappointed with this latest work from an author who has established himself as a capable researcher, free thinker, and good writer. His books are always a good read. It helps that he covers "Who woulda thunk?" subjects, but I think more than anything it's the way he writes about those things. I enjoyed this book, just as I have enjoyed reading his other books.

In The World's Weirdest Places, Redfern discusses 25 locales that have something positively weird about them. Some of these places are famous for one thing that's weird, but that's only part of the story. For example, the New York City subway (alligators) and Loch Ness (the Loch Ness monster). But they are weird for reasons beyond those famous examples. If you took away the alligators and the Loch Ness monster, the New York City subway and Loch Ness would still be very weird places.

Some of these places are ones with which I had no previous association with weirdness. I think each reader will find several such examples. Most Americans will probably have to include Bhangarh, India. I had never heard of the place before, but it is truly weird!

This book consist of 25 chapters, spread across 186 pages. Each chapter is devoted to a different weird locale. There's also a conclusion, in which Redfern offers a possible explanation for all this. The book is also indexed, which is helpful for those using it as a reference text. The bibliography runs 15 pages long, which is about on par for a Redfern work. I really can't comment on the veracity of the sources. But I can say where Redfern presented information on something I already knew about, he made no errors of fact. I've now read several Redfern books and have yet to find an error of fact. That's really something, considering that I usually find at least some factual problem in any book.

For those who aren't familiar with Redfern or his works, here's a little information. He writes about the paranormal, unsolved mysteries, government conspiracies, and (apparently) alien encounters. Unlike many others who write about these things, he doesn't proselytize a particular "this is the truth" viewpoint. He's not out to convince the reader of anything. Not so much in this book, but typically he will present various theories that "explain" why some nutty thing is the way it is and he'll show you the holes in each theory. Rarely does he reveal his personal opinion or which of those theories he favors. His approach is to inform, not to convince.

Redfern didn't include Washington, DC on his list. That's a place where taxpayer dollars disappear, monsters destroy personal liberties, and crime runs rampant as if there were no law at all. But that's not weird, it's unconscionable. And, of course, there's no explanation for all this so it would not fit with his conclusion chapter. Well, OK, there's no excuse for all this. So his leaving this extremely strange place out of this particular book does make sense. Perhaps soon Redfern will write a book about that weirdest of all places, where we can't expect aliens to find any sign of intelligent life.

I bought this book and thought that it would be a bunch of mini point pleasants, this book while entertaing is more a collection of folktales rather than a serious report on High Strangeness. Worth reading just not worth buying new.

Tim Davie is a research scientist working in the areas of land use change hydrology and Integrated Catchment Management in New Zealand. He is President of the New Zealand Hydrological Society and previously lectured in Environmental Science and Geography at Queen Mary College, University of London.

Fundamentals of Hydrology

I had to take a forest soils and hydrology course as part of my undergraduate study in forestry. I had never taken a hydrology course and frankly didn't have the slightest idea what to expect in this class. This book happened to be on the recommended readings list on the course syllabus. I found it at a reasonable price on Amazon so I purchased it. This turned out to be a great investment! Not only did it help me during this particular class, but I find myself revisiting it from time to time in graduate school. The book is written in a very natural, easy to understand way that I was able to grasp immediately. It should be noted this book only teaches the basics of hydrology, hence the title "Fundamentals of Hydrology," so if you already have an intro to hydrology text you may find this text to be redundant.

Don't buy this

Do not purchase the Kindle edition until they fix the errors.

This Kindle edition has lots of words missing in chapter 2.

For example:
"This is throu bination of altitude, slope, aspect and d weather direction influences and can occur different scales...THE RAIN SHADOW EFF".

I haven't contacted anyone about this defect yet. Because I haven't figure out how to exchange or contact anyone about a Kindle edition defect.

About the Author
Wayne D. Hoyer holds the James L. Bayless/William S. Farish Fund Chair for Free Enterprise and is Chairman of the Department of Marketing. He received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. from Purdue University. His major area of study is consumer psychology and his research interests include consumer information processing and decision making, customer relationship management and new product development, and advertising information processing (including miscomprehension, humor, and brand personality). Dr. Hoyer has published more than 100 articles in academic journals, such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, and other marketing and psychology forums. His 1998 article on assortment perceptions (with Susan Broniarczyk and Leigh McAlister) won the 2003 O'Dell Award from the American Marketing Association. He has also been the Montezemolo Visiting Research Fellow in the Judge School of Business and is a Visiting Fellow of Sidney Sussex College at the University of Cambridge (UK). Dr. Hoyer has taught internationally at the University of Cambridge (UK), University of Mannheim, the University of Muenster, and the Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany), the University of Bern (Switzerland), and Thammasat University (Bangkok, Thailand).

Deborah MacInnis is the Charles L. and Ramona I. Hilliard Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Marketing at USC's Marshall School of Business. She received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on the role of emotions in consumer behavior and branding. She has received the Journal of Marketing's Alpha Kappa Psi and Maynard Awards for the papers that make the greatest contribution to marketing thought as well as the Long-Term Contribution Award from the Review of Marketing Research. She is former Treasure and President of the Association for Consumer Research and former Vice President of Conferences and Research for the American Marketing Association's academic council. She is the winner of local and national teaching awards. Dr. MacInnis has also served the Marshall School of Business as Vice of Research and Strategy and Vice Dean of the Undergraduate Program. Her consulting includes work with major consumer packaged goods companies, business-to-business marketers and advertising agencies. Good overview of the field, well organized, and contains the latest research

I use this book in the undergraduate course I teach on Consumer Behavior. The book is well organized, starting with the basic cognitive and motivational processes that underlie information processing. Next it moves to how people form attitudes and make decisions. Finally it covers how to target specific groups of consumers and how culture influences consumption decisions. The research it cites is up to date and credible. It could be written at a higher level (it seems pitched toward 100 level courses), but is the best textbook I have seen of the 5 or so I have checked out so far.

Book was definitely soaked once

The delivery speed was good. The book has barely any marks on which is good but the entire top of the book has wrinkles (most likely from water) and that's a little bit frustrating. All in all it's not too bad for the money.

Has good materials but extremely wordy and inconsistent

I had this book for the consumer behavior course at my school. First of all, let me make it clear that consumer behavior at my school is considered an intermediate course which people should take in their Junior year. Having said that, this book has so many entry-level knowledge that I constantly wondered why anyone would waste papers printing them. I understand that sometimes author tries to cover everything so students understand the whole picture, but I still have to say some materials were simply a waste of my time and money.

Chapters are very disconnected and it was clear that the book authors didn't bother to spend some quality time reading each others' work. My professor had rearrange the order of the chapters to make everything easier to understand. Organization is really puzzling here to me, I mean, why would you have a term in the prior chapter thoroughly explained but not emboldened and come back several chapters later and emboldens the word and explain the whole concept once again?

Go read The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing: A Guide to Growing More Profitably by Nagle, Hogan, and Zale, that is a college level book right there.

Anyhow, at least my professor made the class interesting and gave us some decent work to do on the side so I actually learned something new.

I give it one star for my amazing professor but I just cannot agree with her choice with this book.

Hopefully no one else waste their money on this book.

About the Author
Antonio Davila He is professor of entrepreneurship and accounting and control at IESE Business School in Barcelona where he is the director of the Entrepreneurship department. He received his Doctoral degree from the Harvard Business School and was a professor at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University from 1999 to 2006. He currently teaches management accounting, entrepreneurship and innovation, and sports management. His work has been published in top journals and he was written and edited several books on innovation and management. He regularly works with start-up as well as large companies. He also collaborates with non-profit organizations. He brings passion for mountains and the Latin perspective being from Spain with an Argentinean wife. Daniel Oyon He is professor of management control at HEC Lausanne, the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland since 1995 where he was dean from 2009 through 2012. He received a Bachelor of Science in Management, a Master of Science in Information Systems and a Doctoral Degree from the University of Lausanne. Before joining HEC Lausanne, he worked several years as consultant with Accenture and SAGE serving mid-size and large financial and industrial companies. He was visiting scholar at Harvard Business School from 1988 to1990 and at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2003. He has published in academic journals and he is actively involved in business through consulting assignments or board memberships. An excellent book for learning and applying powerful management concepts

I am a management professor, former manager and social entrepreneur, currently teaching Executive MBA courses in topics such as managerial decision making, and management control.
I decided to test this book with my students, because some of them had problems understanding the accounting books usually used to teach these topics, despite all of them have several years of working experience as managers.
I found that this book by Davila and Oyon is very intuitive and easy to understand. Students can easily connect the concepts and ideas presented in this book with their personal experience as managers.
This book presents some of the main problems managers face in organizations, and offers a clear way of using accounting data and market information to look for answers. It also provides detailed examples that illustrate the concepts, ideas, and relevant analysis.

I would also recommend this book to people thinking on starting their own business.
Probably there are few books that combine so well a lot of powerful concepts, good explanations, and down to earth examples to apply these ideas.
Definitively this book is not for people that want to theorize about these topics, but a book for "doers", people who want to acquire useful concepts and apply them in their jobs and personal projects.

Excellent Source for Glass Knowledge

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of inorganic glass. Varshneya takes the time to explain the fundamentals in the beginning chapters, then gives the reader the specific scientific explanations necessary to get a good understanding of glass and glass formation. The explanations are not confusing, and the problems at the end of each of the chapters are a good reinforcement of the concepts. If you are at all interested in glass forming, this book is good place to start.

An ok book

This book is okay. It is a detailed look into glass science-good for finding specifics about glass without having to search through the journals. But, readers be wary, there are many mistakes amongst these pages. Pay particular caution to derivations and figures-I've had to correct many mistakes the author himself pointed out during lectures. My suggestion for getting the most of the book is to read James Shelby's "Introduction to Glass Science," first for a solid understanding, then delve into the same topic in "Fundamentals of Inorganic Glasses." If this is for class good luck!

Excellent Text Book for Both Beginners and Professionals

This is by far the best written and most comprehensive text book on glass science. My first exposure to glass science was through this text book as an undergraduate student (junior year). Varshneya provides a thorough and highly readable introduction to the most important concepts in glass structure, properties, and technology, making it the ideal book for newcomers to the field. But this book goes well beyond that, providing more detailed coverage of important topics such as glass transition range behavior. Even now, over ten years later, I still consult this book on a regular basis, either for reference or for a refresher on a certain topic. I recommend this book without any hesitation to anyone interested in learning about glass science. It is truly the go-to book, both for students and for professionals in the field.

About the Author

Recommended reading

Mr. Kivisalo's testimony is both scary and amazing. He doesn't belabor the details of the evil he was involved in, but tells enough for us to feel the fear and oppression he lived with. He also doesn't give us a fake fairy-tale ending ("I got saved and lived happily ever after). He candidly recounts his struggles even after becoming a Christian. This book was both a warning (to be diligent in my faith) and a comfort (knowing that God is with us always). I would highly recommend this book.

Even though I have never led a life of crime or been demon possessed, I can completely identify with Rami's so true to life sharing of his life. Although not going full scale as Rami did, I like most everyone, especially those of faith, can relate to the temptations and consequences of breaking laws, getting caught in the snare of drugs and/or alcohol, rebelling against God, experiences with the forces of darkness and struggling to walk a life pleasing to God.

This book does such a good job of bringing out the many lessons of life, encapsulating what life is all about in the extreme. And because Rami has lived in the extreme of evil and then in the love and power of God, it makes this book a riveting read and really helps to take out the gray to see clearly the black and white of just what is wrong with going our own way verses walking in God's way of love and wisdom.

The Christian walk is a progressive life changing experience. God grows us by leading us through life's experiences, it takes our whole life to work out our character. For this reason, I agree with the authors decision to fast forward many years later, and show how God brought Rami through the bulk of his struggles and lovingly brought him to a good life with many blessings and true fulfillment in life. God's obvious love for Rami and to see how he has been blessed brought tears to my eyes.

This is an awesome book and I highly recommend it to everyone with the caveat that it is not suitable for kids unaware of what goes on in the world.

Amazing biography marred by too many loose ends

I found this book unputdownable.

However, the end was very disappointing. There's a huge jump after all the crazy stuff to when Rami is married and settled down and there's a reference to Polokwane, South Africa (my country). Why he is there, how he got married, what he is currently doing... it's all left unexplained.

So, the anecdotes are fascinating but at the end they don't seem to tie together in a unified way. Perhaps more detail on where he's at now would've made a good book great.

Also, a lot of references to Benny Hinn and other similar televangelist types which undermined the implicit theology in this biography.
