About the Author
Peter Ralston began studying material arts at age nine in Singapore. He was a Sumo champion at his high school in Japan and a collegiate fencing and Judo champion while a Physiology/Anatomy major at the University of California at Berkeley. This is the second copy of this book I have purchased. I gave the first one to a friend not knowing how hard it would be to find afterward.
This is the companion volume to Cheng Hsin: Principles of Effortless Power. Both books studied together are written well enough to allow the dilligent learner to grasp the concepts and techniques taught in this book. That doesn't mean it's easy but Peter Ralston Has given every detail possible without showing up at your doorstep to deliver the book himself. Highly Recommended.

About the Author
Mr. Joseph H. Noar is a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Orthodontic Unit at the Eastman Dental Hospital, London, UK. He qualified in Dentistry at the University of Manchester in 1981, completed his postgraduate specialist orthodontic training at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1988, and was appointed to his current post in 1993. Mr Noar is first and foremost a clinician but has always been involved in orthodontic research and the development of the specialty in the UK. He lectures nationally and internationally, has published widely and teaches on the postgraduate orthodontic training program at the Eastman Dental Institute. He has served the British Orthodontic Society in various capacities for many years.

A dry classic

The book opens with a long preface and introduction in excellent 19th century style. Chapter 1 also gives the basic principles of heat, such as what we call "Newton's law of cooling" (sec. 3). From here we derive the heat equation (chapter 2, esp. �142). In chapter 3 we solve the heat equation for an infinite rectangle with given boundary conditions. This of course calls for the principles of Fourier analysis, which are explained in full generality (sec. 6). Then in chapters 4-8 we do the same thing for other bodies (rings, spheres, infinite cylinders, infinite rectangular prisms, cubes). In the case of cylinders, Fourier series are not appropriate to solve the corresponding heat equation in polar coordinates, so we must introduce Bessel functions. In chapter 9 we study the diffusion of heat in bodies with no boundary influence. The simplest example is the isolated, infinite line. This leads to Fourier integrals. Throughout, the theory is essentially identical to the modern one, except that Fourier couldn't care less about about convergence and such. It is understandable that Fourier wished to devote an entire book to the rudiments of Fourier analysis. I still think it's a pity that he didn't find it appropriate to include his favourite application: "The problem of the terrestrial temperatures presents one of the most beautiful applications of the theory of heat", he says (�12), but does not treat this problem further here.

Top Notch Fantasy

The first three books of the Wheel of Time saga are exceptional modern fantasy. There is a lot of originality, lots of action, and a powerful sense of both doom and mystery.

If you're looking at buying these books, you've undoubtedly come across the criticism of the series length and the quality of the later books. And its true, the series does falter rather badly beginning around book 6 or 7, and there is a steady deterioration from there. The sense of mystery and doom dissipate, the action and plot advancement cease and the characters all devolve into indistinguishable buffoons.

HOWEVER, the first half of the series, and in particular these first 3 books, really are great, and highly recommended. I'd say just keep reading the series until you feel you found the point where it doesn't work for you anymore, then skip to the end once Book 12 comes out.

Completely Addictive

I have read Tolkien,Heinlen, Herbert,Donaldson, Eddings and a great many others. This series by Jordan is by far the best and worst I've ever read. The characters are so well developed that you can imagine what they are thinking even when it's not printed. The world so clearly rendered, that you see, smell, hear, and feel it rather than read about it. Yet unlike other books, there are no filler pages. Everything in the story, from the first scene to the last, is important and will come back to haunt you. I absolutely love this series. I have and will read it again and again. The thing that makes it the worst is the eternity between books. Until this series is complete, and my guess is ten or eleven books, every other book I read will only be a place holder.

An Engrossing Fantasy Series

After finishing the latest release in the Game of Thrones series last summer (A Dance With Dragons), I began searching for something to fill the fantasy void in my life. One series kept popping up: The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Despite the glowing reviews (at least for the early books), I was nervous for three reasons.

1) Robert Jordan passed away before being able to complete the series. While the series has been picked up by a seemingly worthy successor, it was hard for me to imagine investing myself in an author's world for 10+ books only to not that author deliver the payoff.
2) The reviews for the books later in the series (starting at book 7 or 8) are absolutely horrific. The long-time readers appeared to be extremely unhappy with the direction of the series. On the plus side, the reviewers did unleash some really excellent sarcasm in their reviews for books 8-10 on Amazon. Good stuff if you can avoid the spoilers.
3) The covers to these books are awful. Books 1-2 are among the worst, but they don't get much better. Reading book 6 on an airplane last month provided me a healthy dose of embarrassment when I was asked why I was reading a romance novel.

So why did I dig in? First, I read some of the reviews for the Brandon Sanderson authored books in the series (12 & 13 thus far, with 14 to be released in January). Against all odds, they are actually seen as an improvement over the later Robert Jordan books. Second, despite the poor reviews for the middle books in the series (the trough seems to be books 7-10), this improvement suggested any struggles would be worthwhile. Third, I decided to take a chance - if the books were really as bad as their covers, I could always cut my losses and move on to another series.

Much to my delight - the books are just as terrific as the majority of the reviewers indicate. I'm 80% through book seven, and have observed no significant drop-off in quality. Jordan's world is rich in detail, and the plot is amazingly complex. Though the world continues to grow in scope, thus far I find each branch of the plot almost equally fascinating, and can't wait to start book eight.

Fans of A Game of Thrones should definitely not fear jumping on board - The Wheel of Time is a great way to fill those 5 year gaps between releases.
