This book is great, I have tried learning Ruby on Rails and ...

This book is great, I have tried learning Ruby on Rails and skipping ruby and i have to say this is the way to go. A great rundown on ruby before you get started on rails to ensure a full understanding. The only issue that i have with this book is that the print is very small and the code samples are written in a light gray color making them even harder to read. I recommend getting the kindle version if thats an option for you.

Gr 5-8-This follow-up to The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science (Workman, 2010) offers 24 engaging and thought-provoking math problems. A brief introduction explains the arrangement of the text and includes some tips and hints for tackling them. Each one is framed as a tough or dire situation that readers must solve using their math skills and knowledge. There are three levels of difficulty: "You Might Make It" (grade 5), "Slim to None" (grade 6), and "You're Dead" (grade 7). The grade-level assignments are based on Common Core Standards in mathematics, which the problems are aligned with. Each entry begins by stating its "challenge." A boxed area called "Euclid's Advice" offers some tips and suggestions for solving the challenge, followed by a blank page for students to work out their solutions. Next, the solution is provided. Explanations are clear and easy to understand. In "Sage in the Tower," readers must figure out how to use shadows and proportions to determine how tall a tower is in order to rescue the king's scholar. Lastly, each challenge concludes with a "Math Lab" that offers an example of how the principles being addressed can be put into action. The layout is clean and attractive with wacky three-color cartoons throughout. My students LOVE this book.

I work with math students in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Every one of my students Love this book! The littler ones are interested in reading the stories and drawing pictures to organize the information, even if they aren't ready to tackle much of the actual math yet; the older students are happily engaged in trying to figure out the solutions. It's challenging stuff, and depending on your budding mathematician, may require a fair amount of assistance. You'll have a great time, too, though!

About the Author
Dariush Derakhshani is a Digital Effects Supervisor, writer, and educator in Los Angeles, California. Previously using Autdoesk’s AutoCAD software in his architecture days, Dariush migrated to using 3D programs when his firm’s principal architects needed to show their clients design work on the computer. Starting with Alias PowerAnimator version 6 when he enrolled in USC Film School’s Animation program, Dariush has been using Alias animation software for the past 11 years. From USC Film School, he received an M.F.A. in Film, Video, and Computer Animation in 1997. Dariush also holds a B.A. in Architecture and Theatre from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and worked at a New Jersey architecture firm before moving to L.A. for film school. He has worked on feature films, music videos, and countless commercials as a 3D animator, CG supervisor, and sometimes compositor. Dariush also serves as Editor in Chief of HDRI3d, a professional CG magazine from DMG Publishing.

There are several sections in this book that were clearly not revised for version 8.0 of Maya. This includes both visual examples and the writing. Turn to page 252: "You can select the specific attribute and zoom in on its curve to see it better, or now with Maya 7, you can normalize the. . ." Inexcusable.

Charles Perrault (1628–1703), a lawyer and member of the French Academy, attained immortality with his 1697 publication of Tales of Mother Goose, a new and skillful treatment�of traditional folklore that served as inspiration for the Brothers Grimm.
A leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement, Harry Clarke (1889–1931) began his career as an award-winning stained glass artist. In a style that recalls Aubrey Beardsley and Kay Nielsen, he�illustrated the works of Hans Christian Andersen, Poe, Goethe, and others.

The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault

Charles Perrault was a famous French literary writer, and at one point in his long and illustrious career, he wrote (possibly with his son) a series of fairy tales. They were eventually translated into English and were/are wildly popular.

Basically it's a book of a few well-known and high-quality fairy tales that have appeal and appropriateness for all ages. The language is a bit old fashioned, as is some of the spelling ('inchant' rather than 'enchant,' for example) but it's definitely worth reading.

Although, the word 'faggot' is used in the text to refer to sticks, which is historically what it meant, but if you're sensitive, that might be something to consider.

There's an active table of contents, no illustrations (but the captions are left in the text to tease), the page numbers are left in the text, and the first letter of every story is mysteriously dropped. Oh, and the very last line of the last story was in an illustration, so that's missing.

The Fairy
Blue Beard
The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods
The Master Cat; or, Puss in Boots
Cinderilla; or, the Little Glass Slipper

Beautiful Little Book

I have a large collection of children's books, including a number of collectible volumes of classic stories illustrated by the greatest artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To find a little collection like this that includes illustrations by Gustave Dor� is truly a treasure. It's also fascinating to see familiar stories close to their original form, without the prudish edits they've collected over the years. Whether you're a fan of the artist and the writer or want a great storybook for your children, enjoy!

Immortal stories with superb Harry Clarke illustrations

If you ever wondered where Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty came from, they came from this remarkable 17th century Frenchman. The stories themselves are fascinating, as they all have morals appended that are, of course, very tied to the cultural mores of the time. And no, they aren't exactly like the Disney versions! Harry Clarke is considered Ireland's greatest illustrator, and the reproductions of his color and black & white work in this book will show you why. The intricacy of the illustrations is just astonishing, and I am happy to say that this book shows them very well - sharp, deep, and with good color fidelity. It's true that some of the females are bare chested and Sleeping Beauty is covered only by a veil, but I find this no more suggestive than, say, Venus di Milo. It's great art, and very much in keeping with the time the tales were written - check out the sky high hair on the noblewomen! All told, a fascinating soiree into the origins of some of our most familiar fairy tales.
