A must-have dictionary at a great price

I'm generally not very happy with dictionaries for one reason or another. But I had very little to complain about with this one - online EN - RU material tends to be very ... sketchy, at best, so I was very delighted to see natives actually understand what I'm saying when I used the translations in the dictionary. It has little accent marks over the words to show you were the stress in the word is, which I found very helpful. If for nothing else, it is a very handy pocket dictionary for every-day usage.

This book is worthless if you can not read Russian. When you look up a word in English the translation is written using the Russian alphabet. there is no pronunciation for the word that is written in Russian so if you do not know how to sound out the Russian letters for the word you can't figure out how to pronounce the word

Different and Better

I have reviewed, read and used practically hundreds of jazz methods and I can honestly say that NONE of them are like How to Improvise. Where other authors overly concern themselves with which scale to play on which chord or memorizing ii V I licks in every key, Crook teaches us how to play music.

Each chapter deals with a different musical aspect such as pacing, phrase lengths, time, dynamics and articulation. There's a text description of each topic followed by a comprehensive regime of exercises dealing specifically with that topic.

A lot of what's wrong with the jazz playing of young musicians could easily be fixed with this one book. I know it made a huge impact in my playing and my career. With Crook's book, I was able to take all of the technique I learned from other books and turn it into something people actually like to listen to. For that, I can't thank him enough.

Terrific Resource!

Hal Crook's "How to Improvise" is an absolutely indispensable resource for developing jazz vocabulary and improvisation. Although he presumes a certain amount of basic knowledge of jazz theory, Hal's jazz exercises are terrific and well organized. Learning how to improvise is often an overwhelming process, and beginning jazz players find it hard to take a structured approach to learning jazz. This is the best resource I have seen - it is comprehensive! Buy it now, don't wait 5 years (like I did) to save the $25 only to come back to it. Another jazz resource I would recommend is Jamey Abersold's "Turnarounds: Vol. 16," which is a great way to learn to improvise over chord changes in all keys.

An inspiration and a must read for everyone who loves their children

This book is not only exceptionally well-written, it is gripping, sometimes gritty but always real. The author effectively conveys the power of unconditional love and eternal optimism in the face of tragedy, bureaucracy, the pharmaceutical industry's self-serving grip on the medical profession and the horrors of navigating all of these waters without a chart and only knowing where you want to be. For good measure there's even a chapter that will make the most steadfast "50 Shades of Grey" fans turn "50 Shades of Red" after reading it. A long book that is a quick read thanks to the author's mastery of communicating and educating unfamiliar subject matter on common ground with the rest of us. Definitely "Thumbs up !!"

Compelling and inspirational

A real page turner! Working in the psych field; being a mother; and a woman- I understood the turmoil or raising a child alone and with special circumstances. A story of perseverance and love. Ms. Hamilton has successfully compiled deep emotions mixed with hopes and failures, but in the end- love conquers through understanding and never giving up. Brava!

More about the mother than the daughter

As a mother of a mentally ill child who is now 40 years old I don't want to be too hard on any woman who tries to tell her story. The book is really more about the mother's journey than the daughter though. I finished the book without a clear picture of the daughter at all other than her diagnosis. I was also left feeling dissatisfied and a lot angry. But maybe that is part of the journey.

The book over all struck me as the story of "I'm madly in love with a emotionally distant looser and oh, by the way my daughter had a schizophrenic breakdown at 15. Sure, she hears 20 voices at a time and is swimming in a lake of fire, but no, she doesn't need to be hospitalized because she's a vegetarian." Say what? I have whiplash. A long tortuous journey through horrible jobs, wracking up debt, getting evicted, loosing jobs at the worst possible times, fighting with the mental healthcare system. I felt her pain. I really did. Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic at all. But I found myself wanting to shake her until her teeth rattled most of the way through the book.

One part of the book that stymied me was her description of finally checking her daughter into a psychiatric facility (at the daughters request)one afternoon and then a few hours later has all kinds of graphically detailed sex with her boyfriend in the shower. I was getting to the point of wanting to spit pea soup.

She took her child of all medications cold turkey and then got furious because no one told her that people can **die** from abruptly stopping anti psychotic medications. Uh well, maybe she could have asked someone before doing this? The author over all seems to be strongly against psychiatric medications. There is a tiny disclaimer at the end of the book to the effect of "yeah, yea some people may need medication, but not my daughter." The publisher probably insisted on that for legal reasons.

This book is a harrowing tale of one woman's journey of dealing with a child with a severe mental illness. But I hope and pray that this is not the first book picked up by a parent when they first discover they are caring for a child with mental illness.

A must read for anyone interested in UX.

This book has proven to be most helpful. It is such a fundamental book on the UX topic that I've never fully comprehended, but always heard the term. The book really took me step by step. The first chapter has introductory sections ("what is ux, really?") that really helped me understand the difference between UX and usability. Also- chapter 3—which is all about understanding who you are designing for. That's baseline content that I found so helpful. Jumping to Chapter 12 - testing. I think that's a pretty fundamental chapter for anyone that wants to learn about this topic. It includes some basics on how to explore whether a design is working or not. There is a lot of misinformation out there on that topic and this chapter really gets to the core of it.

This series has done it again. I bought some other Dummies books, and they were all informative and user friendly, but I was somewhat familiar with the other topics. This one has given me directions and understanding of a concept I knew very little about in thorough yet simple easy to grasp way. Thank you for writing this book.

Great read!

As an account manager in the digital advertising space, I found this book to be an essential reference for both myself and my current team. The book lays out every aspect of UX in a comprehensive and useful way. I especially love the sections on content strategy and usability testing, which are not everyday topics for people who are new to digital work or website development. I highly recommend purchasing a copy for the office!

Someone you know needs this book

This is an especially great book for introducing colleagues from other disciplines to the fundamentals of user experience strategy and design. The content is accessible and timely and the writing style is fun to read. I'm going to keep a couple copies on hand for gifts...
