About the Author

Stephen Prata taught astronomy, physics, and computer science at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. He received his B.S. from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has authored or coauthored more than a dozen books on programming topics including New C Primer Plus, which received the Computer Press Association’s 1990 Best How-to Computer Book Award, and C++ Primer Plus, nominated for the Computer Press Association’s Best How-to Computer Book Award in 1991.

Good info but falling to pieces

The book is very good but I am incredibly annoyed that it is falling to pieces! I think I got a faulty book - I've only had it for three weeks and I've never had a book do this before! Not sure if I can get a replacement or who I contact, if I can I will update this review.

Excellent book

This book is a must have for anyone interested in C programming. Prata is very thorough in his explanations (hence why the book is so big) and goes out of his way to make sure a concept is understood. There are review questions after each chapter and the answers are located at the back of the book. Although this book is aimed at beginners, absolute beginners may have a little trouble at first.

As a word of advice, do the review questions and programs. It will help you understand the topics presented in this book. Imagining yourself doing them doesn't count, open a notepad program and actually write your answers/code.

Kindle Readers Beware

The Kindle edition of this book all but guarantees a very frustrating learning experience. Many lines of text have words with character spacings that are nonsensically ultra-wide and nearly unreadable. Some characters such as bullet points are not displayed correctly and code examples are more often than not just collections of jumbled text. I encounter similar viewing problems using both the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle PC Reader platforms. I am very disappointed with the surprisingly low level of quality control from the publisher.

This collection of essays traces the attempts of one writing teacher to understand theoretically -� and to respond pedagogically - to what happens when students from diverse backgrounds learn to use language in college.

Bizzell begins from the assumption that democratic education requires us to attempt to educate all students, including those whose social or ethnic backgrounds may have offered them little experience with academic discourse.� Over the ten-year period chronicled in these essays, she has seen herself primarily as an advocate for such students, sometimes called� “basic writers.”

Bizzell’s views on education for “critical consciousness,” widely discussed in the writing field, are represented in most of the essays in this volume.� But in the last few chapters, and in the intellectual autobiography written as the introduction to the volume, she calls her previous work into question on the grounds that her self-appointment as an advocate for basic writers may have been presumptous, and her hopes for the politically liberating effects of academic discourse misplaced.� She concludes by calling for a theory of discourse that acknowledges the need to argue for values and pedagogy that can assist these arguements to proceed more inclusively than ever before.

The essays in this volume constitute the main body of work in which Bizzell developed her influential and often cited ideas.� Organized chronologically, they� present a picture of how she has grappled with major issues in composition studies over the past decade.� In the process, she sketches a trajectory for the development of composition studies as an academic discipline.

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant, a book review

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant is a Georgian romance inspired by true historical events. In Midnight Marriage, a young girl of only twelve and a rebellious youth are wed in a ceremony conducted in the dark of night. Then the youth is whisked away by his father, and the young girl returned to her bed. She does not clearly remember the incident as she was drugged. Years later, as an adult, she meets him again but does not realize she is wed to him. He wishes to win her heart without her knowing of his noble title, and on his own merits. They wed again as adults. The rub comes when she learns his real identity and realizes that she has been deceived.

There is plenty of subterfuge in this tale, with several subplots skillfully woven throughout. This well-written historical romance clearly illustrates the author's talent for story-telling. It is engaging, authentic, and comfortably paced. The dialogue is believable and stays true to its period. The settings, outfits, and behavior of the characters are portrayed in delicious detail.

This is a book I would highly recommend to any readers who like a sweet historical romance rife with intrigue and complicated by societal expectations of the time.

One Georgian Historical Romance you have to read!

"Well if you like "Noble Satyr" book one of the Roxton series, you are going to love "Midnight Marriage" by Lucinda Brant. I seriously have devoured Lucinda as an author as her writing flows so well for a book of this era. Lucinda captivates you from the beginning and you won't be able to put this down.

This wonderful Georgian Historical Romance involves a captivating young lady with striking red hair, Deborah. She is a breath of fresh air and goes about her ways inwhich she shouldn't for a young lady unwed. Any gentlemen would indeed love to take her hand in marriage on her beauty alone. But she isn't interested in anyone for his noble status, she is waiting for mister right, a man that truely, deeply loves her and her alone.

Deborah continues to measure every man up to the man she dreams about in her sleep. Dreams of this perfect man that has invaded her nightdreams since she was 12. Does she find this man? Or Does she do the right thing and marry a man to uphold the families reputation.

I like that this book can be read as a stand alone book, but you will love it that much wanting to know more about the roxtons: "noble satyr is the 1st book of the series then "midnight marriage". And yay book three is in the making right now.

All i will say is that there is a midnight marriage.... sword fights and carriages pulled along coble stones with beautiful ladies dressed in gowns ready for a ball. Just as i thought Lucindas books couldnt get anybetter, this did. So sit down, relax with a
high tea and your best sunday dress on, loosing yourself in the world of the Roxton series. (Roxton is a Duke by the way). :)

Impressive! Sequels aren't generally as powerful as the first book, but Lucinda Brant proves the exception.
This is a sequel to 'Noble Satyr'. Both books have a Heyeresque feel to them and as I said in the first books review, that is a good thing. The historical backdrop of Georgian England (Bath)/France (Paris) was still there (foreshadowings of the French Revolution and unrest), but the focus was on the H/H. The intrigue and plot turns were good- things are rarely what they seem. I like how the story begins with an inexplicable event and then unravels to explain it and the consequences of it. The characters were ones with which I could be sympathetic. It was nice to meet up with favorite characters from the first book and oh so bittersweet to see them as the older generation. -; But that is life.

Not worth the purchase

I purchased this book to help with repairs to my truck. However I feel its a waste of money. I have tried looking up two issues that I have, one with fuel system and one with air bag sensors, and found no help from this book. This book covers way to many years, and types of trucks such as diesel trucks, fuel injected gas trucks, carburetor gas trucks, etc... You think your getting a thick book full of information about your truck, but half or more of the information will most likely not have anything to do with your vehicle. When you do find something that covers your vehicle, the information is vague and doesn't show enough step by step instruction on how to do. Most people using this book will need detailed instructions. If they know what they are doing, they would not need the book. I wish I had never wasted my money on this item and as its wrapped in clear plastic, once you open it and find you don't like it, its then used and not returnable. Very disappointing item to me.

Chilton's, what happened?

I have a Chilton's manual that I bought when I had my old mustang. It covers '87-93 Mustangs and was an INVALUABLE resource when I had that car. In fact, I continue to reference it frequently when I'm doing work on my '87 Thunderbird, because it's based off the same chassis and many things are similar. I bought a Hayne's manual for my Thunderbird and I hated it, so I went back to the Chilton's for most reference.

So, when I bought my '94 F-250 diesel, I figured a Chilton's would be a good investment.

Boy was I wrong!

For starters, my truck is a 7.3L IDI Turbo diesel, which was produced in '93 and '94. There is not even a MENTION of this engine in this book. It jumps straight from the naturally aspirated 6.9/7.3 IDI, to the Powerstroke. Now, granted, the Turbo IDI is pretty similar to the n/a IDI, but some mention of the turbo system or something would have been nice.

From there it gets worse. I can't believe the amount of detail that is nowhere to be found in this book. As another reviewer mentioned, this thing completely omits anything about the fuel filters on the IDI engines. Then, later on in the book, it skips over many other topics. It describes how to remove the instrument cluster, but doesn't specify which model year it's talking about, and includes several unnecessary steps while leaving out necessary ones (I removed mine with help from some folks on a message board). No instructions on how to remove the headlights or marker lights are present anywhere in this book...only how to change the headlight bulbs. The exploded assembly diagram for the 4WD front suspension is smaller than a 3x5 index card and it's impossible to make out any detail. Things like this should have at least half a page dedicated to them! And that's just what came across for things I've been trying to do on my truck so far.

I don't even understand how you could produce a repair manual that was lacking this many important details.

A good first source for information at a reasonable price

I bought this as a reference manual on a resto-modification of a truck I've inherited. This is a good basic overview of one of America's most produced and popular vehicles. This manual is nothing short of a bible when it comes to F-150's. Like all chilton manual's, the book is divided into chapter sections that cover specific vehicle systems. it covers a variety of set ups (straight 6, V8's, 2WD, 4WD). Some things are better explained than the others, but on the whole, this is an excellent book to work on your vehicle with. Pictures help with showing the reader and technician the parts and procedures in question. Again some things are better than others. On the whole I would recommend this book

Geostatistics is concerned with estimation and prediction problems for spatially continuous phenomena, using data obtained at a limited number of spatial locations. The name reflects its origins in mineral exploration, but the methods are now used in a wide range of settings including public health and the physical and environmental sciences. Model-based geostatistics refers to the application of general statistical principles of modeling and inference to geostatistical problems. This volume is the first book-length treatment of model-based geostatistics.

The authors have written an expository text, emphasizing statistical methods and applications rather than the underlying mathematical theory. Analyses of datasets from a range of scientific contexts feature prominently, and simulations are used to illustrate theoretical results. Readers can reproduce most of the computational results in the book by using the authors' R-based software package, geoR, whose usage is illustrated in a computation section at the end of each chapter.

Direct and Practical

There's no better way to learn something, but practicing. This concise and direct book shows you what you must know, who you may apply it and the most important of all, how you can do it using R statistical software (an amazing tool by the way). Geostatistics may be tricky sometimes, and as all the statistics you must be sure you are doing the right thing the right way. This book you help you in this task just the way you need.

I was very interested in "Model-based Geostatistics" by Diggle and Ribeiro because I teach a course in applied geostatistics. The book was informative. The preface was interesting read because most of the geostatistics of which I am familiar is based upon the work of Matheron. I was unaware that the Matheron work was "developed largely independently of the mainstream of spatial geostatistics." Topics that were of interest to me were ones such as 2.3 Exploratory data analysis. This concept is often not emphasized enough. Another interesting section was 6.4 What does Kriging actually do to the data? Section 8.1 Choosing the study region was interesting, but, as the authors state "...is often pre-determined by the context of the investigation...." Choosing the sample locations: Uniform designs (8.2) was another interesting section.
