Top Notch Fantasy

The first three books of the Wheel of Time saga are exceptional modern fantasy. There is a lot of originality, lots of action, and a powerful sense of both doom and mystery.

If you're looking at buying these books, you've undoubtedly come across the criticism of the series length and the quality of the later books. And its true, the series does falter rather badly beginning around book 6 or 7, and there is a steady deterioration from there. The sense of mystery and doom dissipate, the action and plot advancement cease and the characters all devolve into indistinguishable buffoons.

HOWEVER, the first half of the series, and in particular these first 3 books, really are great, and highly recommended. I'd say just keep reading the series until you feel you found the point where it doesn't work for you anymore, then skip to the end once Book 12 comes out.

Completely Addictive

I have read Tolkien,Heinlen, Herbert,Donaldson, Eddings and a great many others. This series by Jordan is by far the best and worst I've ever read. The characters are so well developed that you can imagine what they are thinking even when it's not printed. The world so clearly rendered, that you see, smell, hear, and feel it rather than read about it. Yet unlike other books, there are no filler pages. Everything in the story, from the first scene to the last, is important and will come back to haunt you. I absolutely love this series. I have and will read it again and again. The thing that makes it the worst is the eternity between books. Until this series is complete, and my guess is ten or eleven books, every other book I read will only be a place holder.

An Engrossing Fantasy Series

After finishing the latest release in the Game of Thrones series last summer (A Dance With Dragons), I began searching for something to fill the fantasy void in my life. One series kept popping up: The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Despite the glowing reviews (at least for the early books), I was nervous for three reasons.

1) Robert Jordan passed away before being able to complete the series. While the series has been picked up by a seemingly worthy successor, it was hard for me to imagine investing myself in an author's world for 10+ books only to not that author deliver the payoff.
2) The reviews for the books later in the series (starting at book 7 or 8) are absolutely horrific. The long-time readers appeared to be extremely unhappy with the direction of the series. On the plus side, the reviewers did unleash some really excellent sarcasm in their reviews for books 8-10 on Amazon. Good stuff if you can avoid the spoilers.
3) The covers to these books are awful. Books 1-2 are among the worst, but they don't get much better. Reading book 6 on an airplane last month provided me a healthy dose of embarrassment when I was asked why I was reading a romance novel.

So why did I dig in? First, I read some of the reviews for the Brandon Sanderson authored books in the series (12 & 13 thus far, with 14 to be released in January). Against all odds, they are actually seen as an improvement over the later Robert Jordan books. Second, despite the poor reviews for the middle books in the series (the trough seems to be books 7-10), this improvement suggested any struggles would be worthwhile. Third, I decided to take a chance - if the books were really as bad as their covers, I could always cut my losses and move on to another series.

Much to my delight - the books are just as terrific as the majority of the reviewers indicate. I'm 80% through book seven, and have observed no significant drop-off in quality. Jordan's world is rich in detail, and the plot is amazingly complex. Though the world continues to grow in scope, thus far I find each branch of the plot almost equally fascinating, and can't wait to start book eight.

Fans of A Game of Thrones should definitely not fear jumping on board - The Wheel of Time is a great way to fill those 5 year gaps between releases.

A Classic Franco-Belgian Comic

Professor Phillip Mortimer has an interest in Egyptology and decides to spend his vacation in Egypt with his old friend, Professor Ahmed Rassim Bey. They hope to peacefully spend their time de-cyphering ancient papyrus scripts. Unbeknownst to them, the master criminal Olrik also has an interest in the same texts. These ancient documents hold the secret of the Great Pyramid and the riches buried within it.

The Franco-Belgian tradition of comic books began during the Second World War and charted its own distinct path. Many Americans know of the Adventures of Tintin and the stories of Asterix the Gaul. The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer are right up there in the pantheon of great European comic book series. Set in the years immediately following the end of the Second World War, these adventure stories combine a 1930-40's pulp sensibility along with beautifully realized "clear line" illustrations. With their exotic locales and dastardly criminal genius', I am reminded of the Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto movies I watched as a child. "The Mystery of the Great Pyramid" is teenage adventure fiction at its very best. Highly recommended.

Finally, this classic series is out in English.

Finally, after many years after Comcat put out a couple of B&M albums, someone is putting this series out in English. I've long heard about this series, but had never read it. It's great that they have, and I plan on getting all of them.

If there is one issue I have, it's that I wish they had reprinted them in their original order. As the the 2-part "Mystery of the Great Pyramid" comes BEFORE the Yellow Mark, its a little confusing to read them out of order. And it appears the 4th book Cinebooks is putting out is actually the thirteen story, and one NOT done by EP Jacobs!!!

I'd also love to see the Jacob's "U-Ray", the prototype standalone "flash gordon"-like story that served as a loose inspiration published as well.

Big in its day

I had to contextualise this novel to its era to fully appreciate the impact it had upon society at the time. Fortunately I was a teenager living in Sydney when it occurred and remembered the incoprehensiveness of the act amongst people that someone would shoot another human being for the sake of an inhouse fight amongst club members. Unfortunately due to the violence of 9/11 and other terrorists attacks and the frequency of mass shootings in the US and other countries, we as a society are becoming more exposed to this level of violence and whilst maybe not desensitised to it, are switching off for self preservation. However, that said, this novel remains a record in history of a significant turning point of human behaviour and the impact of bikie culture on the rest of society. It marks the turning point in Sydney's history where an individual's safety is no longer guaranteed in not being innocently gunned down on a quiet sunday afternoon. The authors should be congratulated for their objective story telling as it would have been very easy to biase one side of the story. Easy to read.

Interesting, but not deep enough for me.

The book explained the facts around the "Milperra Massacre" well, but it didn't give me anywhere near enough insight to the bikies involved. As a result I finished the book without knowing what really drove any of the bikies to join the gang, why the gang splintered, and what drove the two resultant gangs to war. I felt like a needed to read another book that explained all these things to me.

Terribly written but fascinating subject

The world of the 1%s is an intriguing one, whether you agree with their lifestyle or not. The need to belong, assert their own kind of authority and just to rebel against a world that doesn't always get it right is underlined int he pages of this book. I found it difficult to put down, although I did struggle with the way the sentences were structured and often had to re read lines to get the full context. A little frustrating at times. However, that said, it was enough for me to become immersed in character descriptions to the point where I started to question my own sympathies.... I really felt for some of these people and perhaps this was due to the objective way this book was written, it wasn't telling me how to feel, just that this is the way some people choose to live and here are the possible consequences, awful as they were on that Fathers Day in 1984.

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

Odd plot, but good

We mostly like this book in my house. We bought it because Pretzel looks like Hundley from Curious George. The plot feels a little odd (Pretzel falls in love with another dog and desperately wants her to marry him; she doesn't want to), but I think that's just because it's 70+ years old and it's not what we're used to in our kids' books anymore. Still, it's cute and my son (3yo) likes it, so it's popular in our house.

Cute story

We bought a dachshund 16 years ago, her name was Jasmine, and she grew up with our kids. Jasmine is no longer with us but our daughter and son-in-law bought two baby dachshunds to grow up with their baby boys. After reading this book I had to buy it for our grandkids to enjoy when they come to gramma and grampa's house.

Perfect

Such a good story, especially since we have a dog who is half dachshund, and we call him pretzel dog when he curls up in his bed, and he has a long haired dachshund girlfriend down the street. I am also a long time Curious George fan (so much so I have a tattoo of him). This could not have been more perfect.

Great Original Series

So I was gifted a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and honestly...I loved it as I have the rest of the books in this series.
Unfortunately this book was shorter than the previous books but that didn't take anything away from the story.
Damian grew on me in this book and I liked the way his and Freya's relationship developed.
Great twist at the end. Did not see that coming!
Cant wait for the 5th book to see what happens!
If you want to read something original that hasn't been done repeatedly I highly recommend this Series!

I absolutely loved this series! I was sucked in from the first book. I happened upon them when they were offered through book bub and I am so glad i did. The characters are wonderful and so full of life. They lead you on their adventure with them. I found myself just as torn as the main character Freya when it came to her love interests. I recommend these books to all! I was surprised to learn they were considered young adult books, because I am not a "young adult", and I LOVED them!

I received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review so here it is...I loved this booked! I am a fan of the series and thought book four was even better than book three. I didn't want to put the book down, especially where Damian and Freya were concerned. I would say as much as I love Finn, Damian definitely grew on me in this book. There were two main twists in the book that definitely surprised me; one in the middle and one at the end leaving a cliff hanger for the next book. I cannot wait for the fifth book to come out and pick up right where this book ends.
