Concise yet densely packed with UX goodness

I have been waiting for a book like this for so many years now. I think with every profession there are certain ideas that are taken for granted and, over the decades, become "fact" for practitioners. But just because research showed something 40 years ago doesn't mean that study was well done, or correct, in the first place. The strength of this book is that the author cites more recent research about principles you either thought you knew, and were wrong, or that you thought you knew, and are still right. I feel a certain sense of liberation reading a book like this, because if you cannot challenge your closely held beliefs, what kind of professional are you?

The structure is terrifically usable: one hundred "chapters" that are often only 1 or 2 pages long. In a book like this, the references are as valuable as the author's own writing. I can look up the sources and make up my own mind if I have any questions. But most of the time, I appreciate the author's explanations of the book's segments:
* How people see
* How people read
* How people remember
* How people think
* How people focus their attention
* What motivates people
* People are social animals
* How people feel
* People make mistakes
* How people decide.

Amidst all the success of the book is some occasional lack of proofreading on the editor's part. This is not the author's fault, but I do think the editor was not up to the task. But that does not inhibit the usefulness of the book. It is dense, yet concise. A really good reference to keep on the shelf at one's desk, no matter what research and design projects one works on.

Immediately useful tips

This appealing short book brings together little nuggets of psychology, which the author makes immediately relevant to design decisions.

It's simply and clearly written. You can choose whether to read it straight through, focus on just one of the 10 sections, or simply pick out a single item of the 100. Each one is:
- self-contained,
- described with an example,
- supported by appropriate research, and
- finishes with one or more 'Takeaways' that you can use immediately.

Lots of scientific facts

The book, 100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People by Susan Weinschenk, is an interesting collection of facts and thoughts about how people perceive communications and the world around them. While applicable to graphic designers, much of the information in the book would be useful to anyone involved in communicating with people in any medium.

This book is easy to pick up and put down as each of the 100 things take up only two or three pages with easy to scan charts, illustrations and pull boxes.

Some of the facts are things many people already know, but some of them provide additional information to accompany common held rules. One example of this is thing number four which discusses how and why the brain recognizes faces. Using this information, graphic designers can make educated decisions on when and how to include human photography in design work in place of object or nature photography based on the reaction they hope to create.

User Interface designers should pay close attention to the following sections: How People See, How People Read and How People Focus Their Attention and How People Decide. The author looks at how people relate to information based on where it is placed on the page, the errors in relying on eye tracking studies, how font choices impact how people read, what draws people's attention, how long people really focus on different types of information, and what you can do to influence the decisions your viewers take.

Marketers of all types should pay close attention to things 33 and 34 which talk about how people process information when presented in a story format and how people learn from examples. These examples can be applied to a number of different formats such as crafting compelling stories to convince a customer they will benefit from your product or providing step by step relevant examples when designing training documents.

The section, What Motivates People, should be required reading for those designing materials with the goal of having people take action. This section compares how people make choices and why people search for information.

This is a great book to read while near your computer, as many sections refer to websites and YouTube videos containing additional information.

Overall this book didn't include any earth shattering information, but rather gives scientific facts and information to back up some of the commonly taught design principles and practices. This book could be helpful to anyone at any stage in their design or communications career. New students will benefit for having some of the data to back up some of what professors teach and experienced designers will re-learn some of the basics and keep them fresh in their mind while working on projects.

What makes this book so perfect is that the plot moves along smoothly and sexually with no tragedies, or duplicity by their friends, or dangers, it is just a delightful romp full of hot sex while the guy who only likes boys who like girls, overcomes some mental challenges from the object of his affection to finally finding what he has always sought. Boys who love boys who love girls, maybe...

Jag is attracted to boys, just the wrong kind of boys, boys that like girls; straight boys.

Carson is not attracted to boys, or maybe he is...

Tired of relationships with women that seem to go nowhere Carson thinks he now has the best of both worlds when he hooks up with Jag for no-strings sex while keeping an eye out for Ms. Right. At least it's that's the way it started out. Despite the original agreement of friends with benefits, a deeper attraction ensues, Jag fighting his emotions and Carson having to rethink his attraction to a guy.

"Boys" was a quick and steamy read, recommended for an evening of guilty pleasure and avoidance of housework.

Also in this book we revisit Kellie our sexy masseuse and his friend Ty from another one of Ms. Hauser's books, "Happy Endings".

Oh and hey, the cover model is delicious if I do say so myself, Ms. Hauser does have an eye for the pretty (& hot) ones!

as usual G A Hauser has done it again with her m/m stories. All of my favourite subjects were covered, men loving men, cars and HAE. Although don't know what Carson saw in Virginia *shivers* she was annoying.
great read and must have addition in your m/m collection.

Nigosian (Univ. of Toronto) has written a remarkable book. Though one might quibble over the omission of any meaningful discussion of fiqh (at least it's in the glossary) or object to glib treatment of some rather controversial topics (the influence of the Night Journey and Ascension literature on Dante is not as cut and dried as the author repeatedly asserts), this panoramic overview of Islam is refreshing in its conciseness and logical order of presentation. Succinct discussions of complicated topics, such as the origins and development of Shi'ism, the causes of Ottoman decline, the phenomenon of jihad, moral and social behavior of Muslims, women's religious duties, Islamic feminism, and observances and festivals, all merit especial praise. In addition, there is a seminal theological comparison of Islam to Christianity (normally not included in a work such as this), a discussion that does not gloss over important differences or sugarcoat the rough edges that religious traditions often exhibit. There are a few misstatements of fact (the third surah of the Qur'an is not entitled Ali Imran). The occasional typographical errors, appearing mostly in relation to the author's own system of transliteration, are relatively minor. Summing Up: Highly recommended. I found this treatise informative and fairly balanced, free of bias either way, and thorough.
There is much information (re the various divisions ) which I had not run across before ,but on the whole ,it is a good introduction to Islam.

An excellent gift for a fan

I got this four volume set as a present for a friend who really admired his work--in front of and behind the camera. The intimacy of the photos are great, and the presentation in the book is lovely. My only wish is that all the volumes had been hard-bound rather than paperback, but the presentation sleeve is quite nice, so that almost makes up for this little quibble.

The Complete Package

The public Yul Brynner is so powerful: the definitive "King" of "The King and I," the lean man in black (and by far the most Magnificent) in "The Magnificent Seven," the relentless robot in "Westworld," and the brave spokesperson for Lung Cancer, that it is easy to forget that behind the elegant looks and polished diverse performances there was a strong intellect, a keen eye, and unrivalled access to the most glamorous, intriguing people of his time.

"Yul" captures both the world the Yul Brynner moved in and gives the reader a shimmering glimpse at the artist behind his public persona.

All photographs reveal as much about the photographer as the subject. In the images here, it is clear that Yul Brynner had the gift of making the people around him feel at ease, entertained, and, most importantly, themselves.

Catch a glimpse of his daughter Victoria, only a toddler, but clearly delighted in her father's company; Ingrid Bergman, eyes alight with laughter; or Frank Sinatra, relaxed in a way the public never saw, and you will feel welcomed into Yul Brynner's private way of seeing. These photographs make his vision of the world real.
