  • Are you a food addict?
  • Do you gain more weight than you lose after every diet?
  • Can one cookie destroy all your good intentions?
  • Do you eat when you are disappointed, tense or anxious?

Since its publication, Food Addiction has become a primary resource for food addicts and compulsive eaters. Now it is updated and presented in a revised and expanded edition, with a new chapter on relapse. For a food addict, relapse is an ever present danger which begins in the mind before reaching for that cupcake or other trigger food.

Here food addiction is defined, trigger foods are identified and consequences of food addiction are revealed. A lifetime eating plan demonstrating how to stick with a healthful food plan for the long term is also provided.

"For some people, foods can be as addictive as alcohol," Kay Sheppard explains. "Gummy bears and marshmallow chicks can be vicious killers whose effects can lead to depression, irritability and even suicide. The terrible truth is that for certain individuals, refined carbohydrates can trigger the addictive process. This book is an effort to help you understand and solve the problems of compulsive eating."

Includes some very helpful info, BUT...
    By Annonymous
I recently realized that I have an actual food addiction after 25 years of weight issues, body issues, and yoyo dieting. So... I punched it "food addiction" into Amazon. Since this book came up first, I gave it a shot first.

    The Good:
There were good things in the book for me and not so good things for me. Here's the big takeaway for me personally (and honestly I could have skipped reading this book and just got this one concept and would be just as well off): Food Addiction is real. It's as real as being addicted to Alcohol or anything else. And you have to treat it as such. Now, you can't just stop eating like alcoholics are supposed to NEVER drink alcohol again. BUT, you have to PERMANENTLY stop eating the foods that make you binge. I never even thought of thought of that. The author suggests cutting out sugar, wheat, flour, and any other food that makes YOU binge. For me, add any corn products to the list: tortilla chips, popcorn, etc and also all potato products: chips, fries, hashbrowns, etc

    The Bad:
While what I put in "The Good" section above was worth the read alone, there were several things that made me think I was wasting my time:
    - She makes you adhere to her very strict food plan. If I have to cutout my binge foods FOREVER, I'm not going to eat as strictly as she prescribed.
    - This book is targeted to WOMEN. The concepts seem to work for both men and women, and she doesn't directly say FOR WOMEN ONLY. BUT, ALL the examples are women.
    - Some questionable food recommendations. On her strict diet plan, she does allow margarine (trans fat... hello?) and fruit juice (sugar water... hello?). Now this may just be because of how dated the book is now. Which leads me to...
    - The book is quite dated.

    TL;DR:
If you're searching for "food addiction" books on Amazon, then you may want to skip this one, just read "The Good" above, and try another book for actual tactics.

This Book is Saving my Life
    By krosmon
As a 63-year old woman who has lost and gained hundreds of pounds over the past 40 years, this book has shown me where the ultimate problem lies. This is the first time I have ever been on a diet where I felt so good and had no more cravings or even the desire to binge eat. I am slowly losing the 154 lbs. that I need to lose - which I have never been able to do before without feeling deprived. This book is a miracle for me and I only wish more people would realize the help that is in there for those who have lots to lose. I cannot praise this book enough. Thank you for writing it - it has become my food bible and I will never again let food ruin my life as it has done in the past.

    Unrealistic and dated
    By Kelly A. Ohlert
First off, I'm glad this book and plan have worked for some people. As is the case with any self-help book, there are always those who find something to take home, and these people tend to be the ones motivated to write glowing reviews. I am not that person

This book is dated and contradictory. Its "new science" is nearly two decades old, and it shows. Both addiction and nutrition science have come a long way since this book was first published in 1993.

The most serious issue with this book is its inherent contradiction in advice. The author derides "reducing diets" as being depriving and thus leading to more binge behavior, but advocates total lifelong abstinence from all sugar, wheats and most fats. She apparently misses the contradiction here - if a person can't stop eating compulsively, how are they supposed to quit sugar, wheats and fats cold turkey? The author suggests 12 step programs and God. She derides other diets for forcing dieters to have to think about food "all the time", and then offers a "food plan" that would almost necessarily have the same effect.

That being said, it's not all bad. The book will make you think about what you eat and why. It posits some interesting connections between carbohydrate intake and neurotransmitters, which is certainly worth exploring with your physician.

In the end, it's not horrible book, but it's probably not a real answer for most people struggling with food.
