A must-have resource

The first edition of the AIC Guide to Digital Photography and Conservation Documentation was an important purchase for my lab. By explaining the rationale for recommendations for small private practices as well as large institutional labs, it helped me choose appropriate equipment and software, and establish a time-efficient work flow and file storage protocols that were appropriate for my practice and my institution's budget.
The second edition is much expanded from the first and even more useful. It contains all the information found in the first edition, updated to reflect changes in hardware and software since the first edition was published, but also provides expanded information on infrared and ultraviolet photography. While the given task at hand may not always require special photo documentation techniques, it is fantastic to have a resource handy that provides me with the information I need to take my documentation to the next level and beyond.
The book is also an important resource when working with interns. In addition to including a highly useful appendix of photo editing software screen shots, the second edition is spiral bound, allowing the book to lie flat on the desk for easy reference when teaching others how to work through the protocols for the lab.

A must-have for the conservation studio

If you are looking for guidance on how to set up a digital documentation workflow for your conservation practice, look no more. This second edition of The AIC Guide to Digital Photography and Conservation Documentation comes loaded with new information, updates on new software and equipment, and step by step instruction to illustrate key aspects of digital photographic documentation. The new internal spiral binding allows it to lay flat (comes in handy when working on the copy stand and consulting the book at the same time). The book was awarded the Preservation Publication Award from the Society of American Archivists and is an essential reference for the conservator's library.

This book is a fabulous and much-needed resource for the conservation field. Conservators are ethically bound to document treatments performed on artistic and cultural materials. This guide provides in-depth explanations of the concepts, equipment, process, and file management pertinent to digital photo-documentation. Whether you're starting digital or converting from a film set-up, you'll find useful guidelines that help standardize photographic documentation in the conservation field. When I assembled my digital photo-documentation suite, this reference was indispensable.
